Colorado Ski Country- Summit County

3.5 of 5 stars based on 5 votes

The Best of the Best Winter and Summer Activities in Summit County, Colorado- including skiing, dining and other activities

  • 1. Breckenridge
    Breckenridge, Colorado

This town is the best in all of Summit County- best nightlife, best restaurants, best town. However, the mountain can be overcrowded- especially on weekends and a better bet would be to go to Vail, Keystone (amazing terrain park-even just to watch people pull tricks), Copper or Beaver Creek instead. Die hard skiers that like the local down-home scene would be best off at A-Basin, especially in the later season- open until July!!

  • 2. Keystone Ski Area
    Keystone Ski Area, Keystone, Colorado

By far the best events during the year- Mardi Gras, Bluegrass and Beer, Wine and Jazz are some of the best. Also, you can't beat the mountain biking in the Keystone Area- especially in the Ranch areas and Colorado Trail. Smooooth trails make it easy for people who don't bike all that much, but still want a great workout. If you are staying in Keystone, stay in the River Run Village for easy access to skiing, events and restaurants. The best place for families to stay is "The Springs" condo complex because of its pool and game rooms. If you can afford it, dinner at the Ranch is to die for, and the Ski Tip Lodge provides a romantic atmosphere. The sleigh rides out to the back ranch in the winter are great with awesome food- but aren't as great in the summer where it's just mediocre bbq. The best bar in Keystone by far is Kickapoo Tavern in River Run.

I don't golf, but I hear this is the best resort in the area for golf. 2 tough courses and driving range.

  • 3. Breckenridge Ice Rink
Stephen C. West Ice Arena, Breckenridge, Colorado

Fun alternative to skiing, open year round- located at the south end of Main Street.

  • 4. Breckenridge Nordic Center
    Breckenridge Nordic Center, Breckenridge, Colorado

A beautiful, quiet way to take in the gorgeous scenery of Summit. Rentals available for traditional cross country skiing, skate skiing and snowshoeing. One time doing this and you'll be hooked. Also great is the Frisco Nordic Center which has lots of easy trails that go along lakeside.

  • 5. Frisco Nordic Center
    Frisco Nordic Center, Frisco, Colorado

    See Breckenridge Nordic Center

  • 6. South Ridge Street Seafood Grill
South Ridge Street Seafood Grill, Breckenridge, Colorado

One of the best restaurants in town, and surprisingly, great fish for being so far away from any ocean! Fantastic food and environment for groups of friends or intimate dinner for two. Other restaurants I'd recommend in Breckenridge that weren't listed: Mountain Flying Fish (Sushi), Taddeo's (Italian), The Cellar (upscale tapas and prix fix menu), and Cafe Alpine (listed below). STAY AWAY from the Whale's Tail and The Dredge- incredible tourist traps with mediocre food. As for bars, the best nightclub is Cecilia's with a young, rowdy crowd, The Brown is an old haunted house on Ridge Street- just a block up from Main, and The St. Bernard has a great mellow bar for an older crowd in the back of their restaurant. Downstairs at Eric's is the best sports bar with a video arcade and kid friendly food.

  • 7. Cafe Alpine

See South Ridge St. Seafood Grill above

  • 8. Peak 8
Peak 8 Fun Park, Breckenridge, Colorado

Fantastic fun park in the summer!! Alpine Slide, Putt-Putt, Ziplines, and Human Maze. Beware of going in the late afternoon- high risk of it closing due to weather, and some get stranded at the top of the Alpine Slide until weather clears and it is safe to go down

  • 9. Dillon Reservoir
    Dillon Reservoir, Dillon, Colorado

During the short summer season, the best place to hang out is the Tiki Bar at the Dillon Marina! Just steps away from the Ampitheater and park, you can enjoy some rum-runners before you take in the free entertainment. Getting there by bike along the bike path is recommended if you plan on having more than one cocktail-- they mix 'em strong!!

Great website to find condos and homes near the slopes for much cheaper than through property management companies. I'd recommend staying in either Breckenridge or Keystone.
