So you want to visit Guyana? I recommend Bartica. The Gateway to the Interior, it offers adventure without having to give up creature comforts.

1. Guest House in Byderabo
Situated a mile away in the quiet "burb" of Byderabo is the most lovely Guesthouse in Guyana. It is a large house with 5 bed rooms, kitchen, sitting room, opening up to a lovely view of the Essiquibo River. Swimming Pool, Electricity, Warm Showers, Comfy Beds. No A/C but not necessary because of fantastic breeze.
2. Club Modern
Located at the Hotel Modern, Club Modern is usually the place to be on Saturday. A cover of $300 Guyana Dollars usually gets you a good DJ and some Caribbean music to wine to. A bit loud. Go later for the party that sometimes doesn't stop.
3. REGATTA
Regatta is AWESOME! Speedboat races on the river lasting all day Easter Sunday. Party starts the Friday and lasts the whole week after sometimes. Location: Pavillion (by the hospital). There are two Regattas, one on Easter and a next one at the end of July. Both are totally fun events!
4. Francis's Restaurant: Brazilian Meat on a Stick
Located in a pink shack on 2nd Ave and 5th Street. For $1000 Guyana ($5 US) all you can eat Brazilian style food. Delicious meat prepared Brazilian style (grilled on a stick) and served hot and fresh. Buffet with beans, noodles, veggies and salad. I eat here weekly!
5. Transportation: Getting there and away
Speedboat from Parika to Bartica: $1800 Guyana (Oct 2006) one-way
Taxi in Bartica: $300 per drop, $500 to distances outside the Bartica Villiage

Taxis run 24/7 but Speedboats run from 5:00 am to about 5:00 PM.
6. Marshall Falls Boat Tour - Balkarran's Boat Service
Take a tour of Marshall Falls and the Mazeruni River with Balkarran. We have used him several times to take trips to the falls, see rapids and go camping. He is very knowledgable about the area and provides a nice tour and help climbing the falls! $40,000 for the day ($200 US) for the boat- can be split between a group.
Call 592-455-2544, 592-621-0469 (cell).
7. Balkarran's Guest House (D factor to the Interior)
Quaint Yellow Guest house right on the fork of the Essiquibo River. Friendly and knowledgable owners. Clean rooms, great breeze, about $5000 a night.
