A good place to start if you are planning your first trip to Newport RI, from another new person's perspective
We stayed at the Attwater Villa in August 2006 and chose it based on price and the recommendations of TripAdvisor reviewers. We did not want to stay someplace overdone with lace and frilly stuff, we did want to stay somewhere nice, clean, comfortable, and close to everything. We succeeded by staying at The Attwater and the reviews here were all accurate.
The rooms are spacious, clean, and quite comfortable. We stayed in a suite and also saw a deluxe queen room and thought both were more than adequate for our brief 3 night stay. The suite was definitely a bit nicer because it was brighter and had a more comfortable bed.
Like others have said the innkeepers/owners were very friendly and full of knowledge about the local restaurants. You cannot go wrong with any of their suggestions. In fact, I wouldn't even bother with a place that they did not personally recommend.
Breakfast was delicious the first day, good the second day, and well, it didn't change much so it did get boring after that, but it was no big deal. Plus, there are so many amazing restaurants in Newport, breakfast can be kept simple.
The only thing The Attwater did not have that I have sort of grown used to having at places like this is a big open parlor on the first floor with a receiving area. No frills snacks were always available but don't expect the homemade cookies and tea/coffee in the afternoons like at some places. This is the only near-negative thing I can say about The Attwater, and it should not discourage anyone from staying there unless you require those things.
We would defintely go back to The Attwater and truly fell in love with Newport during this visit.
Loved The Elms! We did this tour a day after The Breakers and both were fantastic. We wanted to do The Behind the Scenes tour but just ran out of time, so it gives us an excellent reason to return! The Elms visit is a self-guided audio tour and was a great way to tour the mansion, though the opportunity to ask questions about things is not as accessible. Still it was great to be able to go about things at our own pace.
The best clam chowder! We loved having lunch here at the outdoor cafe on a beautiful sunny afternoon. It felt a little like we were in another country not just a couple of states away. We also bought some of their frozen clam chowder to take home and save for the first snow of the season, a new family tradition.
