Perfect Day In St. Augustine

Sep 20, 2006  Veteran traveler to St. Augustine, Florida
3.5 of 5 stars based on 8 votes

If you just have one day to experience all the remarkable beauty and history of St. Augustine, definitely go by this golist. Short, but fits a lot in also. There is a lot to see and a lot do, but I recommend starting with the basics.

  • 1. Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine, Florida
    http://www.staugustine.com/directory/old_town_trolley

Let the experienced and knowledgeable guides of Old Town Trolley Tours drive you around while telling you the history of one of the Oldest Cities. There are many stop points to let you off and on and see many different sites while riding. I recommend that once you get on you stay on through one go around, to learn the entire story of the city that the guide has to offer, unstead of hearing just a little bit at a time.

  • 2. St. Augustine Lighthouse

This is such a beautiful lighthouse. It is worth the LONG walk up and down the stairs to see the view. Plan on spending an hour to an hour an a half (for those in regular fitness shape) at the lighthouse and gift shop. Very clean restrooms and water fountains.

  • 3. Fountain of Youth - North America's First Historical Site
    http://www.fountainofyouthflorida.com

If you are visiting St. Augustine, you can not miss going to Fountain of Youth, which is North America's First Historical Site. Lots of beautiful birds including Albino Peacocks. Very interestiing and entertaining. This tour is mostly self-guided. You can buy some fountain of youth water in the gift shop to take home. Plan on being at this site for about an hour.

  • 4. St. George Street
St. George Street, Saint Augustine, Florida

Walk down this beautiful street to purchase some wonderful take home pieces to remember your day trip, grab something to eat, and people watch. Enjoy the musicians out playing their instruments and singing.

  • 5. Fort Matanzas
    Fort Matanzas, Saint Augustine, Florida

Very inexpensive and enjoyable. You learn the history of the fort and more about the city that surrounds it. This place guarded the "back way" into old St. Aug. and alerted the main fort (Castillo San Marcos) of incoming intruders. There is a beautiful park and picnic area under some large oak trees to rest if needed.
A ferry takes you to the fort.
