4.5 of 5 stars based on 1 vote

Just a list of the most wonderful archaeological sites where to feel the past without the crowds.

  • 1. Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana)
Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana), Tivoli, Province of Rome

A wonderful and fresh garden full of beautiful and almost intact roman buildings, in the middle of the Latian countryside. Plenty of things to see, without too mach people so you can fell the past and not be pestered by too many crowds around you

  • 2. Dashur, Egypt

The other great pyramid site near Cairo, just without the crowds and far more interesting than Giza. The Bent and Red pyramids, both built by Snefru, father of Cheops, stand there almost unnoticed by anyone. Not far are some other pyramids like the Pepi I and Pepi II , and from the entrance to the Red pyramid you can see Saquara. The Red pyramid is open and you can go there and feel how it is to be inside one of these wonders, in the 3rd largest pyramid in all of Egypt.

  • 3. Tiwanaku
    Tiwanaku, La Paz, Bolivia

The most mysterious civilisation in all of the Andes left this beautiful and strange city of stone in the middle of the Andean Highlands, more than 4000 m above sea level. The sky is dark blue, and the statues and monoliths are so strange that you almost feel that you are visiting a non human civilisation remains.Wonderfully free of tourist coaches unlike Machu Picchu and ohter Inca ruins

  • 4. Baelo Claudia, Spain
Archaeological Ensemble of Baelo Claudia, Tarifa, Costa de la Luz

The most wonderful beach in southern Spain is also home to one of the best preserved Roman towns in Andalusia. you can visit the temples, the markets, the fish proccessing factories and the theatre. Then you can have a swim, eat some fried fish or climb to the huge sand dunes to have an incredible view of the beach, the bay with the african coast in the distance or the Roman town itself.

  • 5. Heraion, Samos Greece
Heraion (Temple of Hera), Pythagorion, Samos

A remote and not too visited little spot in one of the most beautiful islands in the whole of the Mediterranean. This was the home of Pythagoras ,Anaxymandrous and other philosophers and scientists, as well as one of the most famous sanctuaries in Ancient Greece. Today, a few beautiful stones and a single pillar survive from the temple of Hera, wife of Zeus. The surrounding countryside is pleasant and full of the scent of flowers and wild herbs.
