On the road around Vancouver

We travelled to and around Vancouver for 10 days, by hire car. Vancouver is suched a chilled out city. The people are really nice and we had a wonderful holiday. If you have time, make sure you check out Vancouver Is in the summer.

Basic, good value hotel, great for basing yourself in Vancouver for a few days...see our last night for best of Vancouver accommodations..

  • 2. Stanley Park
    Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia

Hire a bike or some roller blades and take a few hours to cruise around and through this beautiful park.

  • 3. Whistler
    Whistler, British Columbia

Maybe not so worth visiting in the summer, seemed to be a hang out for good lookin' rich people with nothing to do but drink at one of the many Starbucks or if you're lucky you might get to check out the 'dustivities' at the mountain bike competition.

BC Ferries, Victoria, Victoria Capital Regional District

Really impressed with the ferry service, efficient loading and unloading and a nice smooth ride (on the day we went anyway). Found the format of staff announcements particularly amusing....Female attendant. Upper deck. Wet spill. I guess you had to be there.

  • 5. Ocean Dreams
Ocean Dreams B&B, Ucluelet, Barkley Sound

Do yourself a favour and head over to the west coast of Vancouver Is. Book your ferry in advance and cruise over to the island with the highest concentration of black bears (apparently) in Canada. A wonderful chillout location with plenty of excursions and tours to eat away at your holiday budget...but well worth the trip. Beautiful.

  • 6. Tofino
    Tofino, Clayoquot Sound

A little more touristy than Ucluelet but just as beautiful and plenty of places to chill out. Everywhere we ate the food was delicious and fresh, lots of great seafood and for a really nice meal get along to the Schooner. We went on a bear watching tour which was easily one of my highlights. Make sure you get stuck into the local beer and/or wine. I was really impressed with the British Columbia whites and quite enjoyed a few nice local lagers as well..

Really lovely hotel. Wish we could have stayed longer but never mind. Beautiful big bathroom, comfy bed and super staff! Enjoyed our stay here thoroughly. Also perfectly located near Robson St and the something or other shopping centre.

Annual fireworks display over English Bay. We were lucky enough to book a restaurant with a (slightly obstructed) view of the bay and the fireworks. Oyster Bar & Grill. Pity they brought our main meal just as the fireworks display started and it was a bit crammed on the balcony with the rest of the restaurant. But on the upside we did have a lovely meal, watched the sun set over the bay and laughing at all the people getting crushed, trying to get out of the area at the end of the show while we sipped our wine and waited for dessert to arrive...ha ha ha.
