California Driving Tour

Aug 19, 2006  World Traveller
2.5 of 5 stars based on 15 votes

This is our recent three week driving tour of California. My wife and I took our two young boys.

  • 1. Los Angeles
    Los Angeles, California

Apart from the parks and Venice we didn't really enjoy LA. The traffic was insane and it took hours to get anywhere. The people in general were quite sullen and unfriendly. The major sights like the walk of fame look tired and well worn. Californian's don't seem to like kids much. Not our kind of town. Also, LA should be renamed New New Mexico.

  • 2. Hilton Los Angeles / Universal City

    Avg price: $236

An excellent hotel located next door to the Universal park entrance

  • 3. Universal Studios Hollywood
Universal Studios Hollywood, Los Angeles, California

Great fun, but sadly no where near as good as the Universal in Florida

  • 4. Holiday Inn Anaheim-Resort Area
    Holiday Inn Anaheim-Resort Area, Anaheim

    Avg price: $131

Fine hotel, but quite far from the Disney parks. The bus to the parks is not as regular as you would like

  • 5. Disneyland
    Disneyland Park, Anaheim

Most of the major rides broke down in both parks over the two visits. Obviously in need of maintenance. Florida Disney is much better

  • 6. New York - New York Hotel and Casino
New York - New York Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada
    Show Prices ABS:HotelCheckRates-d91904?&src=GoListDetail&fromServlet=GoListDetail&Action=QC_Button
    Avg price: $139

An excellent hotel among a lot of tired hotels on the strip. Great bars and restaurants.

  • 7. Death Valley
Death Valley Junction, Death Valley National Park

113'F when we drove through... *PHEW*

  • 8. Bishop
    Bishop, California

We drove all the way from Las Vegas to Yosemite (11 hours), but in hindsight we should have stayed in Bishop for the night. It's a nice little town with plenty of restaurants and places to stay.

  • 9. Curry Village
Curry Village, Yosemite National Park, California

    Avg price: $129

Outstanding camping fun. "Rough it" for a few nights in Yosemite and after the plastic fantastic California of LA you'll have a new found lust for life.

  • 10. Holiday Inn Express Three Rivers Sequoia Park
Comfort Inn & Suites Sequoia Kings Canyon, Three Rivers, California

A neat comfortable hotel near Seqouia NP. It's about 30-40 minutes from the park so use it as a stop off before or after your visit.

  • 11. Colton Inn
    Colton Inn, Monterey, Monterey Peninsula

A lovely hotel in downtown Monterey. Excellent location and great staff

  • 12. Big SUR Roadhouse
Big Sur Roadhouse, Big Sur, California

We enjoyed an excellent breakfast here

  • 13. Holiday Inn San Francisco Golden Gateway
Holiday Inn San Francisco Golden Gateway, San Francisco, California

Great staff and an excellent central location for sightseeing (away from the dross of Fishermans Wharf). Some great restaurants hidden nearby.
