How to enjoy Williamsburg, VA on a limited budget

  • 1. Quality Inn - Lord Paget

A great hotel at a great price. The hotel is 50 years old and still has a sterling reputation. Small pool, but very nice. Quiet surroundings. Good location. Free breakfast. Coffee and tea served all day.

  • 2. Chowning's Tavern
    Josiah Chowning's Tavern, Williamsburg, Virginia

A FUN place to eat right in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg. After walking through the gardens and seeing the free sights on Duke of Gloucester, slip into Chownings for a COLD ale, an inexpensive barbeque sandwich and a few rounds of Gambols with other patrons. Listen to live "balladeers" as they travel from table to table to entertain the guests. A great way to get a "taste" of Colonial Williamsburg without the commitment and price of an all day tour.

  • 3. Jamestown / Scotland Ferry

A free 15 minute ferry ride across the beautiful Jamestown River. It's worth the drive to Smithfield from the Scotland Wharf in Surry.

  • 4. Smithfield
    Smithfield, Virginia

Park at the end of the street and browse the lovely shops in this quaint, riverfront town. It has been preserved very well and the locals seem to have alot of pride in their town. Visit The Isle of Wight Museum. It tells alot of the area's history and it's free.

  • 5. The Smithfield Inn Bed and Breakfast, Restaurant and Tavern
The Smithfield Inn Bed and Breakfast, Restaurant and Tavern, Smithfield, Virginia

Go early enough in the day to eat lunch at this Tavern. The food is incredible and not expensive for lunch. You can get the same great dinner entrees at lunch prices. If the weather is nice, dine outside on the covered patio.

  • 6. Virginia Scenic Byways

Travel the off-beaten path of tree lined roads leading through country villages and farms. You can stop in and tour one of the plantations or just roam around the grounds. Highway 5 and Highway 10 are my favorites. Both follow the James River and run between Richmond and Williamsburg, VA. These routes are much quieter and more relaxing than the busy, hectic interstates most folks travel in that area.
