London proper may be the music hub, but it's surrounding cities aren't bad either
1. Cambridge
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
(Pink Floyd) This iconic band formed in Cambridge, a city of England best known for the world-renowned university that shares its namesake.
2. Liverpool
Liverpool, Merseyside
(The Beatles). John and Paul met when they were just teenagers at a rock concert in Liverpool and the rest is history. Aside from the Beatles, Liverpool also features a top football (soccer) team in the English Premier League. On the economic front, it is best known for being England's second largest sea port, with London being the first.
3. Glasgow
Glasgow, Scotland
(Franz Ferdinand) The ascendant art rockers, post punk revivalists, whatever - you -want-to-call-them hail from this instrumental city of Great Britain (which does indeed include Scotland, so yes, Franz Feridinand in that sense is British, and thus the list maintains its integrity). Glasgow is known as being an important port city and also has a very distinct dialect called Glasgow Patter. Don't plan on understanding a word if you're American (and I mean that affectionately).
4. Manchester
Manchester, Greater Manchester
(Oasis) The majorly successful British pop stars hail from this blue collar town, notable for its historically powerhouse football (soccer) team, Manchester United.
5. Sheffield
Sheffield
(Arctic Monkeys) This four-piece indie rock band hails from this historically industrial city. Sheffield earns its name from having the Sheaf river go through it.
6. Wakefield
Wakefield
(The Cribs) The Cribs have hit the big time in 2006, touring with Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand. Wakefield, like Sheffield, has its roots in the industrial-revolution. Coal, in particualr, was a key resource of Wakefield's during this period. After the mines were closed as a result of the strike of 1984, unemployment hit big in Wakefield. But now the city is thought to be experiencing a rebirth of sorts.
7. Birmingham
Birmingham, West Midlands
(The Charlatans) The Charlatans have had an up and down career, but the city from which they hail is as strong as ever. Birmingham is a beautiful place, with canals running through the city. It is a booming metropolis, with theatre and fine restaurants. it is also very diverse. It is no wonder it is thought of as England's "Second City".
