These are the places we visited on our Summer trip to England. We are British Expats who go home for a taste of reality every 2 years with our children aged 12 and 14. These are some places we enjoyed and hope you would like to visit too.

1. Macdonald Dunkenhalgh Hotel & Spa

Very nice hotel near Blackburn. We stayed here our 1st night in England and were very tired and crabby. Staff in the bar bent over backwards to try and find something on the menu that our picky american children would eat. We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant later and I had such an exquisite roast beef and Yorkshire pudding there that I didn't bother having it anywhere else as I knew I'd be disappointed. Rooms were small, and rather stuffy, and our no smoking room had had a selfish smoker in it recently. Breakfast was good. |

| Lovely tranquil lake in the Lake district. Boat trips are available on the solar powered Coniston launch or on the historic National Trust Gondola. |

The former home of John Ruskinn, now a museum. The movie shown at the museum gives a fascinating insight into Ruskin who was a man with ideas way ahead of his time. Nice garden, art gallery and tea room here too.

4. Jumping Jenny Tea Rooms
|

| The Jumping Jenny Tearoom is located at Brantwood, the former home of John Ruskin, overlooking Coniston Water. The view of the Lake is superb from the tearoom patio. The food and service here was excellent. They win the prize for the best egg mayonnaise sandwich I tried on this trip. Theirs was served on crisp baguette with a vinaigrette topped side-salad. My son loved their bacon sandwiches and ate the same thing for lunch there 3 times in a week. Soups were also excellent and the sticky toffee pudding was to die for! |

| A small cosy restaurant with very attentive but discreet waitstaff. The food was outstanding, very fresh ingredients cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the food so much we came twice in 3 days. |

Lovely hotel on a golf course, excellent restaurant, nice bar, super breakfast. Well equipped comfortable rooms. The only downside is that we stayed over a weekend, the hotel hosts lots of weddings and drunken wedding guests spend the night. We found drunken guests very disruptive in the early hours of the morning. |

Rooms are refurbished but carpets, corridors and public areas aren't and are well past their sell by date. Hotel doesn't have air conditioning and rooms are like an oven in a heatwave, especially as the windows are fixed so they don't open more than 3 inches. Hotel excellently located on the seafront, close to piers and the shops and restaurants in the lanes. Beware, the fire alarm went off during the night when we were there and we found the fire exit door to the street chained and padlocked shut. We had to walk further through the lobby to get outside. |

| Mediterranean restaurant in The Lanes, Brighton, with a wide variety of dishes and value priced set dinners. Nice outdoor location, great for people watching, excellent service and a very knowledgeable and accommodating owner/waiter. Varied and reasonably priced wine list - I highly recommend the Marques de Caceres white rioja. Excellent value for money. We ate there 2 consecutive nights. |

Located through a walkway from terminal 4. Hotel was clean and well equipped. Restaurants and bars were a little pricy, but the food in Zen chinese restaurant was some of the best chinese food I've ever had. |
