San Fran with family of 9

Jul 21, 2006  Recent 1st trip to SF with large family
3.5 of 5 stars based on 5 votes

Seeing SF in 2 days

  • 1. Straw Hat Pizza, Pacifica CA

Great pizza place, Good food...specials on Tuesdays

  • 2. Best Western Lighthouse Hotel
BEST WESTERN PLUS Lighthouse Hotel, Pacifica, California

Great beach location with wonderful views..cliffs on both sides to walk up for great pictures and sunsets. Perfect place to stay for 1st time in CA.. only an easy 20 min drive to San Fran but with views and free parking!

  • 3. 49 Mile Driving Tour

Driving tour with CD and map which came in handy even walking downtown. Cost around $15 and came quickly when ordered. Can go at your own pace but see neat areas not on many tours....We found free parking at the Marina near Fort Mason where we parked the next day to walk to the Pier and Fisherman's Wharf..You go through Fort Mason and is a hike but we did it with 9 people!!! And we walked back late at night and had no problems but seeing 2 skunk in the parking lot when we returned! What a surpriise!
We also got out at Battery Park and walked to the GG Bridge..also free parking!!
We learned there is also free parking downtown on the streets on Sundays!!! Free metered parking...We had a 12 passenger van and would not fit in any lots due to low clearance.
Also loved Twin Peaks! Cool panoramic views of the entire city..WINDY and fun!
The drive can take as long as you want it...We skipped GG park and detoured some areas and added others such as Alamo Square(Painted Ladies Victorian Houses where Full House was filmed in front of)

  • 4. Nick's Pacifica, CA

Pricey seafood restaurant. We had seen good reviews and thought we would try it for the view and food...We were not impressed with the fettucini with prawns or with the salmon..tasteless! My daughters fish and chips were overcooked and soggy...Way too costly for a family and was not as special as we had hoped! No refills on pricey soft drinks..

  • 5. Alcatraz Tours

Great tour! Do with headphones! We had prepurchased tickets online and was an easy process to p/up at window. We went on the 2:45 tour and was fine...Foggy where you couldn't really see the GG Bridge but the day before had been gorgeous when we did walk across the bridge... While we waited for the tour we walked Pier 39 and had corndogs and hotdogs at the local vendor kiosks..Lots of food options in area.

  • 6. Rainforest Cafe
    Rainforest Cafe, San Francisco, California

Wednesdays they have kid's meals for $2.99 not including drinks...We really enjoyed the place after a long day walking and touring...Lots for kids to see and enjoy...Food was really good and some shared combo dishes to save a bit of money...

  • 7. Drive down Hwy 1

Drove down to Hwy 92 to Hwy 1(due to Devil's Slide being out). We went down through Santa Cruz and Monterey.. Somewhere along the way was a neat lighthouse dated to 1800;s and GREAT place for pictures! Walked around in Monterey and had ice cream..Very pretty town...On down to Carmel to see more posh shopping and beautiful homes in area...We ran out of time but would liked to have driven the 17 mile drive around Pebble Beach..Costs around $9 a car but would have seen gorgeous homes and scenery...We drove on down almost to BigSur but thought we had surely gone too far and turned around only to find out later if we had gone over the bridge we had turned at we would have come to it soon! Beautiful drive..!!!! Came back through San Jose.

  • 8. Best Western Grosvenor Airport Hotel
BEST WESTERN PLUS Grosvenor Airport Hotel, South San Francisco, California

Great location with a deluxe continental breakfast! Great place to stay with ease to downtown and other areas..Booked online with hotel directly and got best rates. Pool was a bit too cool for my kids

  • 9. Winchester Mystery House
Winchester Mystery House, San Jose, California

Really neat place to visit...All of us enjoyed the tour..The oldest ones did the behind the scene tours...You can get discount coupons in hotel attraction guide..This is one place we had not previously planned on seeing but after seeing some literature we decided to go and were glad we did! It is in San Jose but was only an easy 30-40 minute drive...Right off Highway.

  • 10. Muir Woods National Monument
Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley, Marin County

We came back from San Jose and changed clothes(was warm in San Jose).. Got to Muir Woods at 6pm..still enough daylight to walk through..$4 per person over 16...If you like to walk trails..allow more time but we were wanting a quicky site! We were able to walk the main trails and be out by 8pm...Such amazing trees! Great to see!
Roads are very curvy to get to so take your Boniva if needed...
We went on on Hwy 1 to Stinson Beach!!!! Majorly curvy roads and steep cliffs! A real adventure..especially in a 12 passenger van:) BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Didn't want to be on roads at dark so didn't stay to eat:( but looked like there were some good quaint little cafes that would have been fun to try! Back on Hwy 1 to SFO! What an adventure!

  • 11. Jelly Belly Factory Tour
Jelly Belly Factory Tour, Fairfield, California

Really fun for all ages..We went on a Saturday when they were not actually in production but tours are still available..Free! Get free samples at the end and can purchase Belly Flops at discounted rates!!!! Loved it!

  • 12. Hilton Sacramento Arden West
Hilton Sacramento Arden West, Sacramento, California

Booked through Hotwire for $68/nt..had 2 rooms! A 4 star hotel with very nice accomodations and bedding..however water bottles left in room if consumed would have been $2.50 ea..and no free internet services that we had at the Best Westerns..Oh well...beautiful hotel and served our need for 1 night!

  • 13. Joe's Crab Shack
    Joe's Crab Shack, Sacramento, California

Our friend treated us to dinner here! Great location on the river in Old Town Sacramento! Food was great and we actually saw fireworks out the window at the end of dinner..(don't know the occasion and if that is done regularly on Sat evenings but was a nice touch!) Would have liked to have spent more time walking the town since it has such history and has been maintained wonderfully! Parking is hard to come by when busy!!

  • 14. Napa Valley drive

We came through this way to see more new scenery and avoid having to travel over the Oakland Bay Bridge on Sun afternoon...When we had come over the OBB on Sat the traffic was horrendous coming from Oakland to SF!!! We wanted to avoid this by all means..So more new scenery and no problem going over the GG bridge that way! We didn't stop at any wineries(kids would not have enjoyed at all) but what a beautiful sight of the vineyards over the landscape...We only travelled the southern edge of Napa and Sonoma but enjoyed the scenery!

  • 15. Homewood Suites SFO Airport North
Homewood Suites by Hilton San Francisco Airport North, Brisbane, California

Booked this through Hotwire at $58/rm per night..We had 2 rooms and they were on separate floors but for the price was GREAT! Had 1 dbd with sofabed which younger ones had to sleep on but had full kitchen and was very new. Great continental breakfast..Our last night and wanted to be close to airport but never heard any airport noise...Not close to much eating establishments..We just ordered pizza in....Nearest food would be back near highway. This location is more in a business/ofc park type area but fairly secluded..nice bay walk across the street.
