This institution has a comprehensive collection, with some highlights including the modern Asian ceramics, the music collection and the excellent interpretation of the ancient Egyptian collection. Thought I'd spend an hour - ended up staying three.
Historic house and collections with fantastic architecture featuring an atrium garden in the centre of the house. An expensive visit for a small collection, but for those with a background or interest in art and history a fascinating place to visit.
A short trip from the centre of Boston, this was a highlight of my trip. The mounted specimens and rocks are displayed in a style reminiscent of 19th century collections, but the temporary exhibition was excellent (landscape photography) and the permanent display of the Blaschka glass botanic specimens were fantastic. The museum connects at the rear to the Peabody Museum - an ethnographic collection. These have fascinating objects from around the world, including a large display of North American artifacts.
My second night in Boston was spent at the Boston Symphony Hall enjoying the Boston Pops tribute to jazz. It was very reasonably priced, the atmosphere was great and I was able to buy tickets for that night's performance about 2 hours before it started from the box office - great for a spur of the moment evening of entertainment.
Wandering around Harvard is pleasure - great bookstores, decent places to eat, lovely architecture. I happened to be there on graduation day and the atmosphere was great. There are several other art institutions on campus - the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, the Freer Art Museum and the Busch-Reisinger Museum - so if you don't have museum fatigue at this point, continue to these great institutions.
