    Union Square, San Francisco, California

    Major shopping area with department stores such as Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Avenue.

  • 2. Dylan's Tours
    Dylan's Tours, San Francisco, California

    Day 2 - took a 6 hour tour around San Francisco with this excellent small touring company. Included the majestic Muir Woods. Dylan rocks!

  • 3. Lombard St, San Francisco

    Day 3 - walked the famous crooked street with many switchbacks. Near the marina end of the Powell-Hyde cable car line.

  • 4. Fisherman's Wharf
    Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, California

    Day 4 - walk from the Marriott Fisherman's wharf hotel, along the marina to the Fisherman's wharf, mostly very touristy, but great views of the marina, bay.

  • 5. Ferry Building Marketplace

    Day 4- visit the Ferry Builidng, great spot for a light meal, people watching. Open air markets for farm produce on Tues, Thurs and Sat mornings. Try the bread at Acme.

    Day 4 pm - take the F line to the Mission, see the Spanish church, Mission Delores, lunch at Pancho Villa or at one of the many excellent taquerias. Yum! Potter around the vintage shops. Check out the colourful murals in the alleys.

  • 7. Golden Gate Bridge

    Day 5 - took the bus through the Presidio to the Golden Gate Bridge. Walking across the iconic bridge was thrilling, with breathtaking views. Walk along Crissy field.

    Day 5- stop for photo opportunity, a popular spot for photographers, both professional and amateur.

  • 9. San Francisco Comprehensive Shuttle Tours
    San Francisco Comprehensive Shuttle Tours, San Francisco, California

    Day 6-7, take a 2 day escorted tour by train / shuttle bus to the beautiful Yosemite valley. This leaves enough time for highlights of the valley on the first day, and a private walk to Vernal Falls and Mirror Lake the next day. Well worthwhile, much better than the single day tour.

    Day 8 - Large park, reminiscent of Central Park, with attractions inside including Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden, California Academy of Sciences, de Young art museum, all with separate entrance fees. Catch lunch in Sunset, 9th Avenue has good places to eat.

  • 11. Powell and Market Cable Car Turnaround
    Powell and Market Cable Car Turnaround, San Francisco, California

    Day 8 - this is a very popular attraction, try to catch this at the Marina end to reduce waiting times. Otherwise the California line cable car is less crowded and will take you to Grace Cathedral and Chinatown.

    My favourite hotel in San Francisco and my first choice if travelling alone. A peaceful haven after conference proceedings, with extras such as wine and cheese evening reception, ample included breakfasts, friendly staff, use of courtesy car. Recommended for those who want old world luxury, but are fit enough to climb the hills! Probably not a good choice for those with small children, who want to be closer to the actions...
