This is an example of a low budget weekend visit in Cartagena with a lot of pleasure !
A very nice and friendly Bed & Breakfast Hotel with (nearly) 5 star hotel services for a 3 star hotel price !
For low budget restaurants I can recomend the following places:
1. Restaurant la Mulata, Calle de los Puntapies in the historical Center, typical local food for more or less 2 USD each a plate !
2. El Bistro, Calle Ayos in the historical Center, very good and well visited lunch menu for only 3 USD with soup, salad, main plate, bread, coffee and water included !
3. On the Parque Fernandez Madrid (corner Calle Santissimo) from tuesday to Saturday 6 p.m. till midnight you will find an "on the street" BBQ where they are preparing the best "Arepa" (typical local food) in the city - prices between 1,5 and 2,5 USD.
4. Crepes & Waffles, Calle Baloco in the historical Center, is a huge franchise restaurant chainin Colombia with very good crepes, sandwiches, salads and waffles. Over 50 dishes for choice and prices between 3 and 6 USD ! Air conditioning and nice interior design included !
1. Walking around systematically the old city center. Takes you about 3-4 hours but then you can say you saw it all ! Costs nothing and it´s worth it. :-)
2. Drinking a fresh fruit juice (about 0,5 L) for only 0,7 USD in one of the Kiosk in the flower park (Parque de las Flores - Avenida Carlos Escallon but better ask for the park !)
3. Go and see the fortress "Castillo San Felipe" - costs about 2,5 USD the entrance and you will have nice views, a lot of history feeling and interesting tunnels ...
4. Sunset at Cafe del Mar - prices are defintely high (3 USD a bottle of water, 4 USD a beer) but you will see the best sunset place with ambient and chillout music !
5. By night go to the Santa Teresa place where a lot of local art and jewelry vendors are sitting around and presenting very nice stuff - majority of the stuff costs 3-6 USD per piece !
6. By night go also to Plaza Santo Domingo, Parque Bolivar and Plaza San Diego - nice ambients for sitting around, observing people, seeing groups of kids dancing typical dances etc...
7. Party ? Go to "Tu Candela" on the "plaza de los coches" or Clocktower place after midnight, 365 days a year opened and with nice ambient, everyone is dancing the croosover mix of salsa, merengue, reggaeton and electronic music - cover 5 USD but its consumable, prices 1 USD for water or softdrink and 3 USD for a alcoholic drink. More decent ambient also with crossover music is in the disco "Babar" on the corner of Santa Teresa place - no cover and prices 1 USD for water or softdrink and 3 USD for a alcoholic drink. In Cafe Del Mar you will have a very nice house music by night - twice a month they have moto parties with a 2,5 USD cover in low and 5 USD cover in high season. Prices are high at least you don´t drink alcohol like me, then its always gonna be cheap ! ;-)
8. Sunday morning 7:00 a.m. - walk around the old city ... There´s nobody on the street, nice for taking pictures of houses and the streets. Later by taxi (4USD) to the Beach of Las Americas - best beach in town (but still not the full carribean feeling like on the islands). You can make a large walk along the ocean and there are not so many vendors like in Bocagrande !
