Wheelchair accessible hotels
based on 4 votes
List of wheelchair-friendly hotels - or better, hotels where you can stay without huge problems. These hotels were visited by myself or were described with detailed info on the Web. Hotels marked with *** were tested personally. The hotels tested were ok for a wheelchair user who cannot walk at all, but who can generally use "normal" bathtubs and closets - provided the bathroom has the right size and layout. Since everyone has different needs, you should in any case contact the hotel to have specific information. Many of these hotels provide wheelchair-friendly rooms; however, we usually choose a standard room because: 1- Wheelchair-friendly rooms are generally the oldest, the ugliest and with the worst position 2- Most of the times the shower in many "wheelchair-friendly rooms" has no grab bars or a proper seat - therefore a bathtub is more confortable. For specific info please see Tripadvisor travellers' reviews. Here I provide basic info on accessibility only.

*** Personally tested. Date: May 2006 Equipped rooms available: yes No steps in common areas (but at the main entrance: use garage entrance). Equipped room: poor, but quite wheelchair-friendly. Bathroom: large roll-in shower with plastic chair. Adapted WC with handle on the left, front access. Note: 15 minutes on foot from the lake, but uphill! Car is a must. |

2. Aracoeli

Lago D'Orta, Italy *** Personally tested. Date: April 2007 Equipped rooms available: no Common area (entrance) accessible. Lift. Breakfast was served at Restaurant Olina, a few meters away, on the ground floor for us (buffet on the upper floor). Access: 1-2 steps. Room tested: 702 (Nothing is impossible). Large room. Huge in-room shower (a plastic chair was provided on request), but no hand shower (?!). Standard WC closet, front access. |

*** Personally tested. Date: May 2006 Equipped rooms available: yes No steps in restaurant and bar. Swimming pool area accessible through special lift. Equipped room: bathroom too small, no shower chair provided (just a stool). Equipped rooms are not renovated (as of May 2006). There is a huge difference between renovated and not renovated rooms. Advice: choose a renovated, "normal" room with a large bathroom with bathtub. You'll be much more comfortable and enjoy your stay much more. |

Closet with two handles. Roll-in shower with plastic seat, but no handles. |

*** Personally tested. Date: December 2006 Equipped rooms available: yes All common areas accessible. Reserved underground parking. Beware: from wellness center to swimming pool there are about 7-8 steps. You can reach the wellness center with the "normal" lift and the swimming pool with the personnel-only lift. Wheelchair-friendly rooms are available (Tyrolean rooms). Nonetheless, we chose a "normal" executive room (Modern) with large bathtub. In some rooms, access to the bathtub is hindered by a glass wall. In some other rooms, the glass wall is positioned on the other side, allowing a comfortable access. Ask for a room with large free space in front of the bathtub. WC: front access only. |

*** Personally tested. Reception/breakfast room accessible through a ramp. The handicap room is located in the new building close to the main building. There is a shower with glass walls that do NOT allow a wheelchair user to approach the plastic seat inside the shower and transfer (besides, there is a small step). The WC handle, if lowered, will not allow you to approach the WC from the side with your chair. Because of this we had to take a standard room. The shower was much larger; you could get inside with your chair and somehow transfer to a plastic chair (to be requested). Of course the WC was standard (no bars). The staff doesn't even care about knowing what is wrong in the supposedly handicap room. |

Sure it is accessible! I contacted them in 2007 to know which types of accomodations are accessible. They replied that wheelchair accessible rooms are deluxe accommodations in either the Tower or the Pyramid. |

*** Personally tested. Date: December 2007 Again, sure it is accessible! But there are NO accessible lakeview rooms. They have about 50 accessible deluxe rooms, but none with a lakeview. Some of the suites are accessible, too. Nonetheless, we stayed in a lakeview room (not an handicap room). In the bathroom, there is of course a normal WC closet (not raised), with front access. No grab bars of course. The bathtub is pretty deep. The shower has a very large glass door and a small step (we did not use it, and I am not sure someone on a wheelchair could use it) |

*** Personally tested. Date: December 2007 In common areas, sometimes the ramp is not close to the stairs and you have to follow alternative routes. BTW, the place is fully accessible. Our handicap room had a pretty small bathroom with bathtub (I guess a shower chair is provided upon request), with grab bars both for the bathtub and the raised WC. |

33. Quality Inn Hollywood

Ave price:
$142

|
*** Personally tested. Date: December 2007 The handicap room has a bathtub with a special seat and grab bars for the WC. To access your room you have to take a special elevator (keys were provided on our arrival) or climb some steps (I guess 4-5). We were allowed to leave the car in front of the hotel lobby. |
