A nice, reasonably-priced hotel with friendly locals. Being on my own, I was nervous
but I was made welcome by the locals and the friendly barmaid who made me some tea although it was not on the menu -a bargain at around 85p. Recommended.
2. seal island boat trips
This was quite a novelty. I have a "bad leg" and was very kindly helped into the boat by one of the owners, a friendly Londoner called Pete, and a nice American couple.
Pete turned the boat around so that I could get a good view of the castle for my photographs. He chatted about London, which I visit regularly, and was very friendly -likewise his partner, a fellow Englishman who engaged in some good banter about being an adopted Scot. We saw plenty of seals and a jellyfish -help ! Pete was obviously used to dealing with them and did not bat an eyelid. Thankfully it never touched us. This trip is highly-recommended. A snip at £6.00.

4. tourist accommodation office
A very clean, bright and well-stocked shop run by a friendly local lady. When I told her I was a "first-time" visitor to the island, she recommended a very good map for a
reasonable £5.00. Plenty of items about the Clan MacLeod were available at a good price. Excellent shop.
5. Dunvegan Taxis
This is a reasonably-priced and efficient service, run by two friendly local lads, Duncan and Willie. They arrived bang on time, helped me with my luggage, and gave some very good tourist information. They are the only taxi-company in the area, so they don't have any competition, but I would recommend them just the same.
6. moonan bay guest-house
When I decided to travel to Skye for the weekend on a short "working holiday", I contacted several hotels and guest-houses in the area. Mr. Archie Campbell of the
Moonan Bay Guest-House called me personally at home, and offered sole occupancy of a double room for £20.00 per night. When I said I was a
non-driver, he even offered to come and pick me up from the bus station. I arrived there on Friday 12th May last. Archie stopped on the way so that I could pick up fish and chips for my tea at a local carry-out restaurant.
Moonan Bay is a small place, with only two double rooms, but I was made very welcome by Archie, and his wife, Katie, who provided a hearty breakfast before I set off on my sightseeing trip to Dunvegan Castle.on the Saturday morning. Archie very kindly dropped me at the castle gates. Katie, who works at the local restaurant, asked me to call her on the way back, so that she could prepare some dinner for me -chicken and chips, again at £5.00.
On the Sunday, Katie provided breakast and dinner -dinner was £12.50
After some persuasion, the delightful Campbells agreed to take £5.00 for Archie's petrol. Moonan Bay is a lovely place, on the highest point in Scotland, surrounded by fields and sheep - quite a novelty for a city-bred lady like me.
Thankfully Radio One was available ! The house is scrupulously clean and
freshly-decorated in sky blue. The bedroom that I slept in was clean and very comfortable. Before I set off on the Monday morning, Katie provided sandwiches for the bus at an unbelievable £2.50. The whole weekend cost £80.00 -a great bargain, and my stay was made all the more pleasant by the lovely Mr. and Mrs. Campbell. I would definitely go back, although I think learning to drive might be a good idea, as it is almost impossible to get around the islands without a car.
