A Perfect Day in Naples

Most of Italy's major cities can come across as safe tourist havens: Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, etc. But Naples is where the real Italy can be seen: It's gritty, urban, and tough, a city that has rebounded from near destruction during World War II and ongoing drug and crime problems. It also has an incredible cultural heritage and a thriving night life. If you are indeed curious as to how real Italians live, Naples is worth, at the very least, a day trip. (And it is the perfect location to launch day trips to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast as well.)

1. Breakfast at Gran Caffe Aragonese
The central location of this café, as well as its comfortable ambience and food (both sweets and savory) make this an ideal place to start the day, for a pleasing Continental breakfast and people watching.
A trip to this beautiful Gothic church (which is not far away from the Gran Caffe Aragonese) can be a quiet beginning to a jam-packed day, or it can provide a moment of respite in the middle of said day. The church also has access to an ancient Roman gynasium and bath.
The main museum of Naples, packed with incredible classical art in an eighteenth-century building: Caravaggio, Titian, Raphael, and much, much more. The area of the Capodimonte also includes a park.
Also located in the same area as the Capodimonte Museum. Not surprisingly, Naples has an impressive amount of catacombs available to visitors, but this one is definitely worth a look.
This beautiful old villa contains the National Ceramics museum, but the real reason to go here is for the building itself, and for the park area, where you can have a picnic lunch (away from the careful gaze of the park monitors, that is).
This medieval castle, located in the Vomero section of Naples, stands high upon a hill overlooking the city and as a result, has the best and most breathtaking views of the city. It's a great way to end a day of sightseeing.
Also located in Vomero, this restaurant is one of Naples' best. The romantic setting and terrific views make it all the more wonderful.
8. Hanging out at Piazza Bellini
Remnants of the ancient Greeks can be seen here, more specifically, a wall dating to the fourth century B.C. But that is not the only reason to come here--the Piazza Bellini is host to a great many shops, cafes, and bars. It's an ideal place to take in the city's bustling night life, and thus it can be a fun and invigorating way to end the perfect day in Naples.
