Vancouver is known for its world class restaurants but getting great food in Vancouver doesn't have to break the bank. Check out these phenomenal restaurants for the hungry traveler on a budget or just looking for a great deal.
This popular sushi take out at 5888 Cambie St., Vancouver, BC sometimes has a line out the door. Like Sushi Garden, they have pieces of sushi and sashimi three times larger than in most other Japanese restaurants. It's fresh and it's almost impossible to eat more than $15 worth because it's so cheap and the pieces are so large. They have about 5 or 6 seats if you want to dine in.
Rodney's is located in Yaletown at 405-1228 Hamilton Street. I always go on weekdays for happy hour when the oysters are $1 each and the menu is 50% off. Great food, really fresh, and nice staff too.
Stepho's is a popular Greek restaurant at 1124 davie street. After 5:30pm there is a line out the door guaranteed. The line moves fast but it's better to try and go early. You'll get a huge delicious Greek meal for under $10 CDN.
I love this little place on Granville Street. Dark and candlelit, locals love to come here late at night with a date or very small group of friends (the place is tiny). Delicious specialty coffees for $3 or less and divine desserts (not just cheesecake) for a little under $6. It's casual and romantic at the same time.
Tasty and filling pasta dishes for under $10. We used to love coming here after a night of dancing to refuel because it's open quite late and the baked pasta dishes are delicious and big enough to share. It's just over the Cambie Street bridge from downtown Vancouver. Look for the MEC store across the street.
You wouldn't think a fancy restaurant in a Fairmont Hotel would be a spot to find a deal but it is. If you get a dinner entree at a little more than $20 CDN, you get a dessert buffet with it. And it is mindblowing. There are some really talented chefs in the back preparing these incredible creations and they keep on comin'. There is a huge variety to choose from too. You have to check this out if you have a sweet tooth. Oh and dinner is good too.
This place is right downtown at 202 - 755 Burrard St. All you can eat Korean BBQ and sushi for a little over $20. You grill the marinated meats at your table and the sushi is made to order. You'll leave smelling like BBQ but you definitely won't leave hungry. Really great place to go when you're starving!
I'm not talking about any specific place but if you find yourself out late on Granville street there are 99 cent take out pizza joints on every corner. You get a big slice for a buck. It's not loaded with gourmet toppings but it's cheap and pretty tasty if you're out late roaming the city.
This pho restaurant is located at 3388 Main St. Pho doesn't tend to ever be expensive but this one stands out because the food is really great. Very nice broth.
There are a lot of Hon's Restaurants and they're famous in Vancouver for their incredible dumplings. Again, you can eat here for $10 or less.
Guu is Vancouver's best kept secret and I even hesitate to post this. There are several Guus in Vancouver and one in Richmond, each with its own unique style and menu. They serve small dishes of cooked Japanese food, basically Japanese tapas. Very authentic and often frequented by Japanese exchange students looking for a little piece of home. Be prepared to wait for a table especially at the Robson one (Guu with Garlic)
