Coolest Things I've Ever Done!

  • 1. Hiking the Great Wall from Jinshanling toward Simatai
Jinshanling Great Wall Tours-Day Tour, Beijing

The 4 hour hike over crumbling stones on steep inclines may not sound awesome, but it was magical. I went in March. It was chilly, but made for great hiking. The views are wonderful and the wall itself just felt magical.

  • 2. Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park
Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai-gun

I was quite impressed at this perfect melding of people and animals intersecting properly. The monkeys do what the do...preen each other, get frisky and warm themselves in the hot waters blissfully. There are monitors there to ensure people don't cross the line by trying to feed or touch the animals, so the animals pay little attention to the people and continue on with their daily duties. The photographic opportunities are wonderful as well. It left quite the impression on me.

  • 3. Leaning Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa)
Leaning Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa), Pisa, Province of Pisa

I got really emotional at the top of the tower. The tower is such an icon and I just never thought I would get to go. But there I was, and it was just beautiful.

  • 4. Wat Mahathat
    Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai, Sukhothai Province

It was really cool by day. But we stumbled upon it later...after dark fell and yet it was still open. The lighting was just barely adequate, but that is part of what made it so special. In this world of Don't Touch signs and safety precautions, it was wonderful to scramble up the side of this old temple at night. You could really imagine what it must have been like during it's heyday.

  • 5. Temples of Uxmal
    Temples of Uxmal, Uxmal

This Mayan site is out of the way and beautifully preserved. The landscaping, the preserved buildings and architecture are amazing. We stayed for the night show, which just added to the magic.
