Sultry Fun in Florida

Jun 3, 2006  It is important to still enjoy where you live even if hurricanes threaten!
4.5 of 5 stars based on 15 votes

I have detailed a day of slow moving fun in the hot sultry weather of off season Fort Lauderdale, FL.

  • Category: Perfect day
  • Traveler type: Active/Outdoors
  • Appeals to: Business travelers, Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Singles, Families with small children, Seniors, Budget travelers, Active/adventure, Tourists, Pet owners
  • Seasons: Summer
  • 1. Morning Stroll

Mornings are the best...and the earlier the better. Don't worry you will not be alone!
Head to the beach and enjoy either a brisk walk or jog along A!A or take to the beach, take off your shoes and enjoy the warm water.

  • 2. Stop for coffee at St. Bart's Coffee Company

Located right on A!A is one of the best and smallest coffee houses in Fort Lauderdale. They have breakfast items that will start your day off correctly-not to mention great coffee and friendly faces behind the counter! Relax there or get your breakfast to go and sit across the street on the seawall...it's all good!

  • 3. Time for a city tour via the WATER TAXI!

Wow, Fort lauderdale has cornered the market on unbelievable sights to see via the water. The Water Taxi is hands down the best and most budget conscience thing to do in town. For only $10.00 per person-can you believe it! This ticket is for all day crusiing on the waterways in Fort Lauderdale. You can get off and on and off again as many times as you want between about 10:30am til almost midnight.
I love this! What a fun way to travel around and not have to park or worry about a parking ticket. Along the way there are tons to see and do.
The homes and boats that you will see may astound you. I live here and still marvel at all there is to see in this water city.

  • 4. Water Taxi Stop # 2 Galleria Mall/Bonnet House

This stop is great because you are close to two very important places. First the mall which is air conditioned and a very refreshing place to be as the heat of the day approaches. From where the taxi drops you off at Borders you just walk across the street to the mall. A nice cooling walk through the mall window shopping is always budget conscience! Stop and try on funky sunglasses or sample some lotions....enjoy yourself!
As you exit the mall on the other side, heading to the east, you will have a momentary blast of heat (a bit shocking at first) then the cool breeze off the ocean will find you...Ahhh.
Cross the Intracoastal Bridge and continue until you see the 7Eleven. Turn to your right and walk to the end of the street to find the famous Bonnet House.
This museum and garden is so worth visiting over and over since each season yields something different here in Fort lauderdale. The Bonnet House is @ 900 N. Birch Rd. and is a 35 acre historical estate. It was once home to two artists who were madly in love. It's all a fantasatic story that you will not forget. It does cost $9.00 to get in and is open Tues- Sat 10-4 pm and Sunday noon - 4pm with guided tours.
After your visit here I would suggest that you reverse your steps and visit the mall for a cool down stroll (Ahhhh ) and jump back on the water taxi.
Enjoy the water taxi ride to Stop #9 which is SE 9th Ave.

  • 5. Water Taxi Stop #9 Las Olas Shops

The heart of Fort lauderdale is Las Olas Boulevard and most assuredly a place that appeals to everyone on one way or another. Are you hungry? Well there is every type of food available. Thirsty? Yup, we have drinks galore here too! But what I really enjoy are the art shops full of interesting knickknacks and borderline strange items that one can only marvel.
A particularly cool and refreshing stop is the Cheesecake Factory at 620 E. Las Olas Blvd.

  • 6. Water Taxi to the Beach....time to people watch!

Take the water taxi to stop # 5-Bahia Mar. Now you are back at the beach and skin is in! Walk down the beach to the north along A!A or even better along the water. If you thought that you had left all of the art back in the shops of Las Olas you are in for a fantastic surprise! Fort lauderdale beaches are entertaining and colorful. When you reach Las Olas Blvd. again (yes it ends at the beach) visit the world famous Elbo Room for a cold libation. The Elbo Room was made famous way back in the 1960's by a movie called "Where the boys are". It has live music, outdoor seating for your people watching pleasure and the best frozen rumrunners in town.

  • 7. Rounding out the day with Happy Hour!

Grab the water taxi and don't worry if you're a little salty and sandy. This is Fort Lauderdale and the real action doesn't begin until way after Happy Hour. Jump off the water taxi at the Riverwalk (Las Olas Riverfront) Stop #11. The Riverfront is home to many bars and restaurants as well as a movie theater. Stroll along the shops until you reach SW 2nd Ave. Turn to your left and stroll across the train tracks into the heart of happy hour land! Pop into San Loco Cantina for a fish taco (or two). This place is small but perfect for a quick bite before a cocktail. My personal favorite is Capone's. This place has the most amazing happy hour from 5-10pm Mon-Fri and 9pm-11pm Sat. and 3 for 1 drinks!!!! Now that will end your day on a happy note!
With all that is between you and a nice shower is your fabulous chariot (the water taxi!!) to take you home! Ahhhh, now that was fun! Go home and order a pizza from At's A Pizza, pop in a movie, and enjoy the air conditioning!
