Jun 2, 2006  I got lots of visitors from all over the place and they all heading New York City, and many of them want to buy condo or townhouse near NYC Train Station area so I eventually accumuate lots of free tips on visiting NYC.

New York City is top 10 most popular cities to visit, but the hotel there is expensive, the transportation expensive, the food expensive if you do not know where to eat. So, Edison NJ came to be one of your choice to stay cheap and nice while visiting New York City.

  • 1. Memorial Day Fleet Week: May 26 - June 2, 2010

    There are many occasions you visit New York City free, and one is this wonderful Macy's 4th of July Fireworks. There are total 4 fireworks stations on the river, but there are many places you can watch the spectacular fireworks over Manhattan skyline. Places like South Street Seaport, you will find many stands provide FREE foods, free ice cream ...etc. You will enjoy a free show and free drinks and free food...in New York City. You can park your car at the Ferry at Staten Island and take the free ferry over to Battery Park and walk along Water St to South Street Seaport.

    Liberty State Park is one of the best place to enjoy a day to see the skyline of Manhattan and Jersey City. It contains several parts including newly renovated and expanded Liberty Science Center. The boardwalk is nice place to walk and relax. The playground is huge for kids, and the bike routes with hills, best place for skateboarding. There is also feery to Manhattan and Liberty Statue. On Fourth of July each year, starting 4pm there is concert at the South Side of the park near Hudson River, and starting 9:15pm there is spectacular fireworks, free food, drinks, ...etc.

  • 5. Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan is FREE!

    When you are in New York City, you want to take Staten Island Ferry, this 30 minutes ferry let you see the Manhattan from water, and it is FREE!! When you arrive Staten Island, you can walk up the hill to Staten Island Library where you can check your email FREE and take a rest. There is a playground with nice NYC view where kids can play for a while before taking the FREE ferry back. Ferry is 24x7, and you can see the night view of Manhattan as well. You can park your car at the baseball field parking right next to the ferry for only $7 a whole day. You may also watch the baseball game. The Ferry Terminal also renovated recently and very new and shine, very comfortable. Along the road from parking to Ferry Terminal also renovated with spectacular Manhattan Skyline view. There is also a Greyhound Sightseeing bus there that can visit many places of Staten Island.

    When you are driving to visit New York City from other states, you may stay in hotels in Central New Jersey, much cheaper, and drive to Staten Island Ferry and park the car there and take FREE ferry with gorgerous view into Manhattan. e.g. you can bid $42 or a few more dollars on 3* hotel at Edison NJ area thru Priceline.com to get wonderful Hyatt Regency of New Brunswick, as you can see http://tinyurl.com/66fxzy

  • 6. Liberty Science Center
    Liberty Science Center, Jersey City, New Jersey

    Liberty Science Center is in the Liberty State Park, right next to the station of Lightweight Rail that can be reach from Newport or Hoboken. Coming from NYC, can take PATH from World Trade Center one stop to Exchange Place Station, and transfer the Lightweight Rail over, very easy. Liberty Science Center can buy a family pass that you can visit unlimited time FREE for a year. Even better, you can visit Newark Museum and over 200 over museums FREE as well for a year. With membership, the IMAX is 50% off, and the IMAX Dome is the best in Greater New York Area, and may be even in the East Coast becuase I have not seen IMAX Dome like this, all others I saw is flat IMAX screen. Parking is $5 for all day, or free for one hour, but if you come in before door open, it would be free. It is newly renovated and expanded. The brand new Wildlife Walk for kids just complete that kids love it.

    You can bid 2.5* hotel at Princeton area at $35 on priceline.com to obtain this wonderful brand new hotel with complimentary buffet breakfast every day, and complimentary dinner Monday to Thursday. The hotel is right off Route 1 and very close to New York City, so it is a great stop while visiting New York City from South, say, DC, VA, NC, SC, FL ...etc. While visit New York City, can then drive to park at Staten Island Ferry and take FREE ferry into downtown Manhattan with gorgerous Manhattan view, and ferry is 24 hours. This wonderful hotel also has full kitchen so that you can also cook some meal at your suite. The sofa bed and comfortable bed can make yoru whole family happy. You can see more review at TripAdvisor that rank this hotel #1 in Princeton area. You can also drive to Courtyard by Marriott at Newport (Jersey City NJ) and park the car at parking deck behind, and take PATH train into midtown 33rd St. If you want to save parking, you may shop at Target and park at their parking lot there. If you are BJ's member, you can also park at BJ's parking lot.

  • 8. Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

    This is one of the most exciting free event for families with kids. You can take subway E to Central Park on Thanksgiving Eve to see the balloon inflation; huge crowd there even till very late. The next day get up early and get a good spot to see. Some companies provide free food or drinks on the street while parade going. You can even bid at priceline.com on 3* hotel at $75 to get wonderful Hyatt Regency at Jersey City with gorgeous Manhatan view and take PATH train at Exchange Place station right next to hotel over to 33rd St to see the parade.

    This new IKEA provides FREE ferry from Manhattan Pier 11 near South Street Seaport from 9am to 9:30pm, for weekdays, every 40 minutes and holidays every 20 minutes. This is the FREE ferry with wonderful Manhattan skyline and Liberty Island view, other than Staten Island Ferry. It is agreed to provide free ferry to both customers, residents and other people. At IKEA, 9:30am to 11am, it provides 99 cent wonderful American breakfast, and other lunch or dinner view are also around $5, unbelivably affordable. The great point is this 450 seat IKEA restaurant has breath holding view of Manhattan. Outside IKEA is a wonderful park. If you got a limited budget, you got to take this FREE Water Taxi ferry to IKEA Red Hook at Brooklyn. It also has free shuttle to IKEA from various subway stations.

This all you can eat buffet is wonderful and every Monday and Tuesday night 6 to 8pm even has FREE live band music.

    If you come up to New York City from down south, along I-95, NJ Turnpike or Route 1, you may find this newly renovated Hyatt Place at Princeton NJ right off Route 1, about 50 miles from NYC is a great location. You can go to priceline.com to bid 3* hotel at $38 to get it. It not only has plenty free parking, complimentary wireless access with 42" big screen, it also provide complimentary breakfast. Right next to it is Market Fair Mall that you can just walk over and may be pick up delicious sushi box from Teriyaki Boy at food court, among other things. It also has theater and huge Barnes & Nobel, so always has good resources on the trip. Even better, a few minutes away is Princeton University that Firestone Library has kids library the best in NJ for kids to play, and brand new 3 story Engineering library open till 2am.

    If you drive to visit New York City from West or South, no matter where you stay at night, you can drive to Edison Train Station and take the NJ Transit train to Penn Station at Midtown New York City, then you are there to travel!!! No need to worry not able to get into New York City, expensive parking in city ...etc. You will walk like a New Yorker and take subway whenever needed. The parking lot at Edison Train Station is FREE during weekends and holidays. If you need to leave the cars for a few days, you may park at Edison Hollow South http://tinyurl.com/5ovhr6 center part of the parking lot without labels FREE. The labeled ones are assigned parking.

    If you want to save the $2 parking at Edison Train Station, you can just drive to Edison Hollow South, the condo complex, that can walk to Edison Train Station. Park the car at the condo parking lot "in the central area where there is NO number labelled". Then walk to the train station, less than 5 minutes. If you want to further save the NJ Transit ticket, then you can find a resident who has a monthly pass willing to loan you during the weekend when they don't work...
    If you join the group and get to know people living in the complex working at Wall St, you can even arrange to go to New York City with them at work days.

    Middlesex Mall and Hardley Shopping Center suround by Edison Train Station, Metuchen Train Station, Metropark Train Station, Plainfield Train Station, Dunellen Train Station, Bound Brook Train Station and New Brunswick Train Station is a huge mall with brand new Harmon, Famous Footwear, Marshalls, Target, Bear Rock Cafe, Regal Cinemas, Pathmark, Villa Pizza, Kohl, Nanking, Sears, Macy's, Red Lobster, Staples, Baja Fresh, Red Robin, LA Fitness...etc. Along Rt 529, you see Bridge Auto, Pep Boys, Fontainebleau Diner, Friendlys, brand new huge Commerce Bank, Hardley Medical Plaza, White Castle, Lube Express, Pizza Hut, Stelton Pizza, Four Seasons Thai, Tawa Cafe, Fairway Golf Center, Stelton Lanes Bowling...etc, eventually huge Asian Food Center. The other side contains Shoprite Plaza with Applebees, Chand Palace, Thai Basil...etc. Across street is Walmart, Sports Authority, Panera Bread, Lowes, Carino's, TGI Friday,...etc. Along Centennial Ave are IHOP, Saladworks, Long Horn, Gabriels...etc. North to Fwy 287 has huge Home Depot, Stop & Shops, KFC...etc. (click the link for all the driving directions)

    There is annual FREE Out of Door concerts at 7pm from Aug 7 to 24 2008 at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. It is great concert each year by famous performers and teams. Take Subway 1 to 66th st and it is right there.

    Lin's Buffet at Chinatown on Center St near Canal St has over 100 dishes with free soup and rice for only $4 per person. After 5pm, even only $3!!! You can pick 3 dishes with rice or 4 if you do not eat rice. Soup is free. You can walk over from Battery Park visiting World Trade Center, or you can walk across Brooklyn Bridge, either way, you see famous NYC Chinatown, Wall Street, South Street Seaport ...etc. and of course, have a delicious lunch or dinner. Another location is near Confucious Plaza at Division St, that is a few minutes walk from South Street Seaport.
