The extended Monroe Family of Lexington, MA, had 15 of its 73 members fighting on April 19, 1775, the start of the Revolutionary War, and unfortunately lost three of its members on that day. The Monroe Tavern, built in 1695, has been lovingly maintained and is available for touring.
2. Minuteman National Historic Park, Lexington, Massachusetts
Walk the first four miles of the legendary "Battle Road" in Lexington, Concord and Lincoln, where colonists battled the British troops. The Visitor Center, complete with artifacts and guides dressed in period clothing, regularly runs a fascinating movie about the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.
3. The Museum of Our National Heritage, Lexington, Massachusetts
Visit the Museum's permanent exhibit entitled "Lexington Alarm'd", an interactive experience viewing artifacts, historic documents and period rooms, all describing the events leading up to April 19, 1775.
4. Battle Green Inn, Lexington, Massachusetts
Any trip to Lexington, Massachusetts, cannot be fully experienced unless one also stays at the historic Battle Green Inn in the heart of Lexington Center, Massachusetts. From this perfectly situated locale, one can visit the famous Minuteman Statue, the Ye Olde Burial Ground, the Hancock-Clarke House, and other memorable historic sites, all within walking distance of the Inn, and get a good night's sleep to boot!
