  • 1. Franklin Barbecue
    Franklin Barbecue, Austin, Texas

Recently named best barbecue joint in America by Bon Appetit magazine, you'll have to cue up early *(by 10:30 a.m.) to enjoy lunch at this hotspot. It's worth it to enjoy the coveted cue smoked with post oak wood. It's located just off I-35, but don't think you can just blow by for some quick take-out. The line snakes around the building and parking lot and they generally run out barbecue by 1:15 p.m. My teens didn't mind the wait through - they spent more time waiting to get an In n Out Burger when it opened in Dallas - and can boast when they check in here on facebook.

  • 2. Guero's Taco Bar
    Guero's Taco Bar, Austin, Texas

A laid-back must for all out Austin trips. Teens can't sample the killer margaritas, but can enjoy the live bands and entertaining people-watching.The tacos aren't bad either.

  • 3. Barton Springs Pool
    Barton Springs Pool, Austin, Texas

A year-round staple, but most enjoyable when Texas temps hit 100 and the cool waters stay a pleasant 70 or so.

  • 4. Congress Avenue Bridge/Austin Bats
Congress Avenue Bridge / Austin Bats, Austin, Texas

Collective groans will likely be the response when you suggest going on a boat tour of Austin's famous bats on the South Congress Street Bridge, but once on board, the trip offers great views of the city and Town Lake. Just be sure to shield your head when going under the colony of bats under the bridge!

  • 5. Central Market
    Central Market, Austin, Texas

Another great people watching spot that manages to attract equal numbers of hippies and yuppies. Enjoy fresh sushi and still catch the Longhorns on the flatscreen.

  • 6. Texas Book Festival

We love to go down every year for this literary Woodstock and there are so many events including celebrity author book-signings, that there is something for everyone.

  • 7. South Congress Avenue
    South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas

Lots of cool shops, delicious food trucks and interesting people-watching here.
