Shopping in Miami, Florida

Mar 10, 2011  Love to shop.
4.5 of 5 stars based on 1 vote

Last year I visited Miami for the first time, and although I had a limited amount of time to shop I thought the shopping was pretty terrific. I just came back from my second trip to MIami and because I stayed longer this year I had the chance to shop a little more. I can honestly say that Miami is one of the best places to shop! Not quite as good as New York City, but still there are some amazing shopping opportunities.

  • 1. Aventura Mall
    Aventura Mall, Aventura, Florida

The Aventura Mall is a lovely place to go on a rainy day, or even to spend a few hours after a day at the beach. There are several department stores, and a wide range of stores in all price ranges. For example there is a ForeverXX1 where I bought a great hoodie for $16.00 and there are several other reasonably priced stores like JC Penny, Sears, the Gap etc. There is a gorgeous Coach store that has all their latest handbags and they also carry Coach accessories like key chains, jewellery, wallets etc. Then there are a bunch of stores - that to me fall in the middle as far as price range....like J. Crew, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger, Hollister and Macy's. There are many high end stores including Bloomingdale's, Betsey Johnson, Hugo Boss, Barney's, Michael Kors, Cole Haan, Juicy Couture and Henri Bendal just to name a few. So it's great that you can shop in both high end and regular type stores. I enjoy this mall because it does have unique stores you won't find just anywhere. For example there is a jewellery store called 'Mia'....it is a beautiful little boutique that is such a pleasant place to shop. One side of the store has a great selection of costume jewellery with many affordable and really different pieces that I have never seen anywhere before. And the other side of the store has more pricey and extravagant jewellery. There is also a Fossil store that has affordably priced watches, wallets and bags. If you are looking for a place to dine I would highjly recommend a place called Ocean Prime. The food and drinks are outstanding and the service is pretty great too and the overall ambience is quite lovely. If you want a less formal place to dine I would recommend the Cheesecake Factory. It's completely at the other end of the spectrum from Ocean Prime, and it is rather noisy, but the cheesecake is fantastic!! The mall is open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. except Sunday it is open from noon until 8:00 p.m. It is located at 19501 Biscayne Boulevard. The website has a map and directions from several different starting points. I think if I only had time to go to one place to shop while in Miami, it would be the Aventura Mall.

  • 2. South Beach

Shopping in South Beach is a real experience. Not only is the shopping great, just the atmosphere and vibe alone makes going to South Beach worth it. The streets are lined with shops, cafes and hotels many in the Art Deco style. Walking by Johnny Versace's house while you are out and about, is a must do. Also if you want the latest fashions or if you are looking for something really unique there are many boutiques exclusive to South Beach. There are all kinds of other shopping opportunities like jewellery stores, shoe stores, accessory stores, lingerie stores and many others. You will not be disappointed in what South Beach has to offer. Depending on how much time you have will dictate what you will be able to see while in South Beach. We spent a few hours here and managed to check out quite a few stores, but I imagine if you have the better part of a day or even an entire afternoon you will be able to shop along all the side streets too, which I hear have some pretty fabulous stores as well.

  • 3. Lincoln Road.
    Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, Florida

Also considered to be part of South Beach is another gorgeous area of Miami called, Lincoln Road. You can do both districts in one day, however personally I like to break it up into two different outings. Lincoln Road has many boutiques that again you just won't see anywhere else. For example there is a store called Morgan Miller where you can get custom made shoes and sandals. You get to pick the style of the shoe...you choose the soles, color, leather, the accessories, in fact you get to pretty much design your own shoes. They will measure and fit you (sometimes you will have more than one fitting depending on the style you decide on) and then they will start making your shoes. And If you don't know what you want there are people there that will help you with all that. My daughter got a pair there last year and the process took a little under two hours from start to finish. My sister got a pair made this year and it took 1/2 hour. The amount of time it will take will depend on the style you choose. Some shoes can take two days if they are a more elaborate design. The prices range anywhere between $150.00 and $400.00. Going to just this one store alone, is worth going to Lincoln Road for. There are many other gorgeous boutiques on Lincoln Road. There are several clothing stores, shoes stores, and I have never seen so many sun glass stores anywhere. If you can't find a pair of sunglasses on Lincoln Road there is a serious problem. The area also has a nice selection of restaurants and cafes and your dog is welcome to sit outside with you at some of the cafes. The entire area seems to be very dog friendly. Lincoln Road is one of my favorite areas in Miami for both shopping and just generally to spend time in.

  • 4. Bal Harbour Shops

This is probably the most beautiful of any area I have ever shopped at - pretty much anywhere. Shopping at Bal Harbour is like walking through the pages of a high end (a very, very high end) fashion magazine. Where else will you find Prada, Gucci, Dior, Versace,, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Valentino, Jimmy Choe and pretty much every high end designer in the world all in one place. Going to the shops at Bal Harbour is a must for any serious shopper. There is a Neimun Marcus and a Saks where you can find great stuff at all types of prices. Granted it is not for the faint of heart, but as I mentioned it is a must see. The shops are gorgeous, candy for the eye before you have even steeped inside their doors. For the most part we enjoyed our time here very much. Although one of the sales clerks at Tod's looked at us like we were not up to her standards when we walked in - just because we weren't dripping in jewels. It was totally inappropriate and so disappointing I feel I have to mention it. My sister had wanted to purchase a pair of shoes there, but the sales person turned us off so much we left. We did shop a lot at the other boutiques and found some great stuff we will have forever. That is the bonus of purchasing something special here, if you are going to buy something from a higher end store you will make sure it is something that is timeless and that you will want to keep forever. After our shopping expedition we had dinner at Carpaccio. Iit was a delicious and lovely dinner. All in all the shops at Bal Harbour are definitely worth checking out. Don't miss this exceptional shopping experience.

This traveler list is to be continued.

  • 5. The Shops at Sunset Place

Although this wouldn't be the first place I would rush to when shopping in Miami, it does have some stores that are definitely worth going to. It is one of the only places in the Miami area that has a Delia's. My daughter has been wearing their clothes for many years and she wanted to finally be able to shop in person in one of Delia's stores. The store mostly caters to teenagers, but there are many items suitable for women in their 20's. I was even able to find a few things for myself, which was a nice surprise. The outdoor mall setting is quite pretty and has many other boutiques. There is a Victoria's Secret, American Eagle, Lucky and lots of other clothing stores. There is also a Pottery Barn and a few home accessory stores, an Imax movie theatre and restaurants etc.
