Things to know before traveling to Gran Bahia Principe Jamaica
Here are some points which I think are good to know before going to Bahia Principe in Jamaica:
It takes at least one hr to get to the resort on the bus from Montego Bay airport.
The hotel is super-clean with lots of rooms. The new additional bldg is just opened in late 2010. All rooms have some ocean view unless you are in the 1st or 2nd floors, so chances are that you cannot see the ocean. (All balconies are towards the pools / ocean).
Unless you have forgotten to bring along your "PAXIL pills" for depression, I am sure you would love the resort.
Remember the un-friendly staff could be found everywhere; however they are a bit more in Jamaica!
Try to make your a la carte reservations early in your stay. The Don Publo is a good one, also the Grill restaurant which has great steaks. The Japanese restaurant is very nice and the guy cooks in front of you which is fun. However the food itself is just fine. I did not try the Italian restaurant.
Snorkelling is great. There is a designated area in the resort. You see a variety of the fish. Take some Bread to attract the fish (see my posted clips).
The pool seats are "towel-marked" early in the morning. Some of the people from the same group would also leave something on the beach and reserve the beach seats too so they can use both during the day. Do not be surprised if you monitor some seats with towels on them and see no one using them in hours! The pool seats are usually "towel-marked" by 8:30 am.
Roads are UK style and compared to Canada the cars drive on the other side of the road. There are no scooters to rent.
In my opinion the Dunn's Falls and Park is a very nice spot to see if you think of excursions. The entrance is $15 and it is about 25 min bus ride to the fall from Bahia. Some tours have the entrance fee included in their price.
The resort had 3 pedalo boats with only one of them in the working situation. There are a few canoes and one catamaran boat as well. Overall OK but nothing to write back home about.
During the day the resort is pretty quiet. There is some activity around the main pool, however I agree with those who said in their reviews the activities are not that sensible compared to the other resorts.
There is a baby-sitter service for $10/hr.
Not too much sand fly or mosquito (however take your repellents with you just to be on the safe side). Remember if you leave the balcony door open during the day, you might get quiet a good number of them in the room.
Internet is 49 cent per minute in the computer room. The wireless access is $15/day. If you are on Golden club, the internet is free.
If you are hungry after 10 pm when the main buffet is closed then you are in trouble! You have to go to the so called "Burger Bahia" which is a small room in the corner of the resort serving burgers with the speed of 2 to 3 burgers per half an hour. I know you are laughing, but I dare you to try it after hours. It is a great joke and a big flaw for a nice resort like Bahia. Wait to see the” expectation for a tip” once you get your burger after 30 minutes.
Yet laugh and have fun since your vacation is what YOU make out of it. I am sure your overall trip is gonna be a really good and memorable one, just like ours.
Cheers.
It is a great place for vacation
