How to immerse in the culture, see the sites, and rock out in Cartagena in 4 days!
Can't miss this, for day one , after check in head to the fort, enjoy naviagating thru unlit tunnels enjoying the history of Colombia!
After sampling some Colombian coffee head to Convento Del Popa, you'll absolutely need a cab to navigate thru the barrios, the drivers will wait for you to be done, you can spend 30 minutes to an hour here, and might even see a Colombia with a sloth for you to take a picture with when you reach the top of the mountain. They once excuted lambs here, then it became a religous site for good purposes, and now is a major tourist site.
This was one of the best and most unexpected parts of my trip, book a 2 hour salsa lesson for 20,000 pesos (cheap), you get a very small class (mine was actually one on one) in a tiny room, but it's so much fun, and you actually will learn if you have never salsa'd.
This is a no brainer, but if you didn't know, walk around the old city and the wall, so many little shops, restuarants and bars, bring your camera! If you're into working out, I rose early and ran the wall, then did a fitness routine across from the wall on the beach right there, great morning workout. We stayed in an apartment in the old city and had the majority of our meals here, and almost all of our night life here, ventured out of the walled city once, don't remember the name of the bar because it wasn't that good anyway.
nuff said. by the way, not the nicest beaches, but check em out...
Ok you want cultural immersion, head down to the pier and book a tour to San Fernando fort, you'll take a boat which is more like a packed water bus to San Fernando, walk thru some 3rd world Colombian villages with wild pigs and donkeys roaming around and then hit the fort, afterwards you have time till your boat gets back, so grab a beer or some food by the restaurant, errr beer/food stand by the beach, this beach is a lot cleaner than the ones in Cartagena. Tour guide highly reccommended although they don't speak english.
ok honestly, i didnt do these, they leave early, and you will find that it is hugely cultural in colombia to go out LATE.... we never woke early enough, but I hear they are really cool. So let me know! ;-)
