Wildlife and Mountain Exploration

This list is for a mountainous holiday trip, but very pretty scenery with an excellent opportunity to see animals along the way.

  • 1. Kamloops
    Kamloops, British Columbia

    This is where we started our holiday, and this city is the hub of most recreational opportunities, as well as opportunities to explore many other places.

  • 2. William McArthur Island Park

    This park gives you an excellent opportunity to walk, play baseball, have picknics, boat etc. It is a recreational hub.

  • 3. Mr Mike's Steakhouse

    This is one of the remaining Mr. Mike's that actually has a dessert and salad bar as well as a pop bar. All of the other restaurants are more of a sit-down restaurant.

  • 4. Fountain Motel
    Fountain Motel, Kamloops, British Columbia

    This is the second time that we have stayed at this motel, and it is very good. Very reasonable cost, and quite comfortable.

  • 5. Sicamous
    Sicamous, British Columbia

    We always stop in this area to go to the Dutchmen's Dairy Farm for their most delicious milkshakes. You can also get other dairy products for fairly reasonable prices, and they were processed right there are on the farm.

  • 6. Field

    We stopped here, in order to stretch our legs, and also to visit the visitors center. We also were able to get some pictures that were around where the webcams for the highway cams show.

  • 7. Lake Louise

    This was our first main stop once we got into the Banff Boundaries. This is a beautiful ski resort village. We stopped at the Lake Louise Family Restaurant, which is located in the little mall.

  • 8. Moraine Lake

    Very pretty area located in the moutains. You can see the 7 sisters, as well as the rock moraine. Please be aware of animals along this stretch. Also, please refer to http://www.pc.gc.ca and look for Lake Louise area/ Moraine Lake area for further information on this trail.

  • 9. Bow Valley Parkway

    This is a very pretty drive, and the possibility of seeing animals is very strong.

    This was a very nice hotel, very reasonable rates. The rooms are quite nice, and if you join the Choices program, you can get a discount.

  • 11. Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

    We went on the road up to this park, and the road is pretty good quality, but very washboard in some areas. So be prepared for some rough terrain. Also, make sure if you go into this park, that you're able to be self-sufficient, as there are areas in this park that are completely wilderness.

  • 12. Canmore Nordic Center

    This is one of the many parks within the Kananasksis County area. There are many trails and recreational areas, but please be prepared to see bears during the summer if you venture out hiking in these areas. Be prepared with bear spray, bear bells etc.

    If you're wanting very delicious pizza and desserts, then this restaurant is for you. Very good atmosphere.

  • 14. Minnewanka Loop / Lake Johnson

    We drove in this area to see whether we could see any animals. We did see four deer in the open meadows. I am sure that you would probably be able to see way more if the weather were nicer.

  • 15. Icefields Parkway

    This highway is simply stunning. If you have the time to drive up here, you need to. The mountains are very stunning, and there is a good chance of seeing animals.

    We had lunch at this attraction. It was very good and would recommend it for others that are wanting a fairly hearty meal.

    Very similar to our other stays with the holiday inn express. Very good quality. There was also a hot breakfast option as well with the conventional continental breakfast. Very clean.

    Very delicious. Very good atmosphere. If you're wanting a place that has excellent food, then don't hesitate go to this location!

    This is the road that was originally created for a fire access road. It has since also become a recreational area as well. Some popular areas to stop are: Ram Falls, Brown Creek, Brazeau River, and Pembina Lakes. For those who are more adventurous, there are also areas like the Stillmore Wilderness area, White Goat Wilderness Area, as well as the Willmore area. But if you go to any of these areas that are complelety wilderness, be prepared to see wildlife, be prepared for emergencies and any other things that may come up.

    This is a very centrally located inn, and also allows for pets in the inn portion. The hotel area is pet free. They offer free continental breakfasts for those who stay with the hotel or inns.

  • 22. Ranchers Sports Bar & Grill Ltd

    We had a delicious meal here. The location of this restaurant is on Smith Street right next to the Best Canadian Motor Inn.

  • 23. William A. Switzer Provincial Park
    William A. Switzer Provincial Park, Hinton

    This park is a huge area, and encompasses many different areas. Some popular attractons within the park are: Jonas Lake, Athabasca Nordic Center, and other areas.

  • 24. Miette Hot Springs
    Miette Hot Springs, Jasper National Park

    The road leading up here, contains a lot of different areas. Some areas are the Pochantas Campground, Punchbowl Falls, as well as the Fiddle River area. On the road up here, we saw 2 big horn rocky mountain sheep. Very windy road, and the chances of seeing all sort of wildlife is a high possibility.

  • 25. Maligne Lake
    Maligne Lake, Jasper National Park

    We went along this road, and found many different opportunities to see wildlife. Remember to keep your speed to no more than 60 km as there are warnings posted for bears, caribou etc. There is also the maligne canyon too. It is also the access point to many popular routes such as skyline, opal hills etc. Please use caution however, if you go on these routes, as it is very easy to encounter wildlife.

    Along the parkway, you can normally see a lot of animals, and caution should be used when you're going down this road, as wildlife could be encountered at anytime.

  • 28. Mount Robson Provincial Park

    We went to the Visitor Center in this area. The meadows is located just to the northeast of the visitor center. There are a couple of popular hiking trails, which is the Berg Lake Trail, as well as the Fitzsimmons Trail. Also the two popular camp grounds are the Meadows, and the River Campgrounds. Please note that you must ensure that you're self-sufficient, and be prepared for encounters with wildlife.

    This is a small little town, but there is a lot of wildlife in this area, and those who are interested in seeing animals or doing lots of recreation. Be prepared for wildlife encounters anywhere around here.

    Very Comfortable lodge, and fairly reasonable rates. Good in the winter where there are alot of winter recreation.

    There are a couple of large provincial parks in this stretch between McBride and Prince George; West Twin Provincial Park, and Grizzly Sugar Bowl Den. Please note that these are both wilderness parks, and you need to be self-sufficient

    This is the hub to many recreational activities, to many different lodges, ski area etc.

  • 34. Blackwater Road

    This gives you some ideas of the road and the acitivities off of it. This road leads from Prince George down to Quesnel.At the end of the blackwater river road, your'e able to go down towards Nazko provincial park. If you turn right at the Batuni Road, you will end up towards Pelican Lake. Caution should be used on the Batuni road from the recent summer fires especially during heavy winds, snow or rain. This road is also part of where Alexander McKenzie travelled. Depending on where you go, also be aware of bears, as some seasonal berries called bufallo berries grow around here.

    This is the second time that we have stayed here, and it is a very good comfortable hotel. Reasonable rates, and close to the hospital.

    Very good food. This is the 3 or 4th time that we have been to this restaurant, and still recommend it.

    This is the hub of many recreational activities as well. Very useful town before going along Hwy 20, or up or down Hwy 97.
