A perfect long weekend getaway in Calgary/Banff. The perfect weekend would happen the first part of July. The perfect weekend would give the lucky traveler a wonderful experience full of experiences that would cover the amazing topography of this area of the world.
The first day we begin by dashing off from Calgary on the 1.5 hour drive toward the Badlands of Alberta.
Going through the prairies and seeing for what seems like forever across the rolling hills of green hay and brightly coloured canola with it's fragrant aroma. See URL for picture of canola fields.
The arable rolling hills with grazing cattle and frolicking horses end abruptly as the land drops into a cavernous awe inspiring sight. The land where dinosaurs roamed. Stop to view the vastness of the Horsheshoe Canyon.
After a picnic lunch along the Red Deer River we take a tour of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. Visiting the museum with it's skeletons of those who made Alberta home followed by a short hike along the trail seeing cactus growing and understanding how this land became what it is.
Heading this time toward the mountains along the horizon. Spend an evening meal in the revolving dining room atop probably the worlds tallest Olympic Torch, the Calgary Tower.
Spend an enjoyable evening walking along the Bow River or strolling through Princes Island Park. Possibley taking in the outdoor entertainment along Stephen Avenue Walk or Olympic Plaza.
Travel 1.5 hours to the west into Banff. After strolling through the shops in Banff we take a trip up Sulphur Mountain to stand atop a mountain peak.
A short distance off to Lake Louise. Princess Louise Alberta from whom our province received it's name. With Victoria glacier named after Louise's mother, the Queen. Fresh mountain air and pristine emerald waters.
After a wonderful meal in the opulent surroundings of The Chateau Lake Louise we head back to Banff.
After an adventuresome day and before heading back to Calgary for the evening we take a well deserved soak in Banff's Upper Hot Springs.
Start the day with one of Calgary's famous breakfasts. Line up for pancakes and sausage and maybe maple syrup.
Head on down to the Stampede grounds after your breakfast and take in some entertainment or rides. Watch one of the many free shows. See how the Native peoples of Alberta lived and enjoy one of their dance competitions.
See a selection of sporting events which are to many a part of everyday life and work on ranches. Bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, barrel racing and much more.
Complete your dream weekend to Calgary and surrounding weekend with the world famous Chuckwagon Races. Follow that immediately with the Grandstand show full of song and dance topped off by a firework display. Many can watch the fireworks for free, but you have a front row seat with the fireworks set to music and dance.
