Great sights in Townsville surrounds

On a recent trip to Townsville I covered some great sights worth sharing with others thinking about visiting the area. Sights listed are located within a couple of hours drive/ferry ride of Townsville.

  • 1. Castle Hill
    Castle Hill, Townsville, Queensland

    Castle Hill is situted right in the heart of Townsville and provides fantastic views of the city as well as the surrounding mountain ranges, coastline and Magnetic Island. It's a good way to get a sense of the city's layout and size.

  • 3. Wallaman Falls National Park

    At 305m high, Wallaman Falls is Australia's largest permanent single drop waterfall. This is an impressive sight to see in full flow during the wet season. There's also a waterhole below the falls, which offers a good spot to cool off in summer.

  • 4. Little Crystal Creek

    The Little Crystal Creek picnic area is a tiered waterfall with several waterholes, perfect for swimming, and all set in surrounding lush, tropical rainforest. This is accessible from the Paluma Range Road, on the way to the village of Paluma.

  • 5. Big Crystal Creek

    Natural waterslides and deep waterholes are the stunning features at Big Crystal Creek. Set amidst eucalpyt forest, this crystal clear creek gushes over smooth rock faces perfect for sliding down into the waterholes below.

    The deepest is the Paradise waterhole, perfect for swimming and a great spot for picnics.

  • 6. Magnetic Island
    Magnetic Island, Queensland

    Picture huge granite boulders dotted with lush trees and vegetation, hugging crescents of golden sand with fringing coral not far offshore. This is Magnetic Island, a gem right on Townsville's doorstep, just a 20-minute ferry ride away.

  • 7. Charters Towers

    Discover Queensland's gold mining history and majestic old buildings at "the World", as Charters Towers was once known in the peak of the gold rush.

  • 8. Tyto Wetlands

    If you love wildlife, particularly birds, then this is the place for you. Not only is it an incredible success as a rehabilitated wetland, it is an incredibly beautiful and tranquil place for nature lovers to visit.
