If you really want to experience the rich variety of foods in Puerto Rico you need to try some of these places. This list is for those you want to explore and visit more than just the metropolitan area. Besides trying good food you will get to see beautiful areas which not all tourist get to go to. Try it you won't regret it.
Mom and Pop Restaurant. Located close to the Light House of Arecibo. Tel # 787-879-5172. Different generations working together. Their specialty is empanadas de Ceti (tiny fish only caught at certain time of year) and bocadillos de Marlin (great tasting fresh fish) and escabeche de Marlin. All a must try. Featured in Andrew Zimmern' Bizzard foods show this year.
It's an adventure just to get to the restaurant but one worth it. Take Carr. #52 south east to #30 south then #765 entrance is at left side. Located in the top of a mountain peak where you can view much of the countryside. Great atmosphere and Great Food. Open fridays, saturdays and on Sundays they have a live band. Once close to the restaurant you will either need a 4 x 4 vehicle to get there or you can experience a ride on a army type truck from the korean war era to get you to the peak. The specialty there is rabbit stew and fried Pork. We tried the rabbit stew with rice and pegeon peas and some green bananas. Delicious. They have hard liquor and beers are cheap beside natural juices. Also featured in Andrew Zimmern's Bizzard Foods show this year.
Great Food! All with a hint of coconut. My husband is not a coconut lover like I am but he was amazed at the great food served here and we had to come back for more this time around. Our favorite is the salmon stuffed with seafood and cover with this coconut based sauce. They have some great appetizers with mixed seafood that are out of this world. Located in Fajardo. Take # 3 east to # 53 south exit #2 airport stay on road curve located in shopping center on right side. Nice Romantic Restaurant. Also has private area for families.
Pork City of the World. This town is full of different restaurants that roast pigs, chickens and ducks. Open on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays with live music, Located in Guavate a little town close to Caguas. Take # 22 east to 18 south to # 52 south once you pay toll in Caguas you will find exit #32 (184). You will drive appropriately 25 minutes through the mountain side road and the restaurant is located on the right. Family atmosphere and great food. Was also featured in Andrew Zimmern's Bizzard Foods show this year.
The best Conch Salad I have ever eaten and best hot sauce too. It the last Kiosk in a roll of Kiosks by the beach of isabela close to Guayataca Beach Next exit over where you will find a Indian head carved into the stone. Take # 22 west to # 2 west to isabela make right at entrance of indian head carved into stone go straight to the town of isabela once there you wil have to find your way down to the beach by making a right by center plaza then another right a block away by the church. then go down to the beach by a condominium till you get to the beach road which curves to make a right and you continue to the end to last kiosk. Sorry can't remember the name. We found this place by accident looking for another restaurant. You will be greeted by the owner a very pleasant older man. The cook is superb. They serve fresh sea food reasonable prices. We also tried sorullos ( corn meal appeticers), shrimp salad, fresh fish balls and they were all delicious. they also have a full bar. you will be in front of a small beach.
