Family fun in the snow with the kids (6 and 9)

Not the cheapest accommodation but very modern and with every mod-con you could want. We even had a little view of the lake, although we hadn't paid for a "lake-view' suite. The Tekapo primary school is handily just next door with a small playground and a snowy playing field for building snowmen and snowball fights, Must have the best view of any school in NZ!

We headed up to Mt Cook early morning - it's a good hour's drive from Tekapo. Beautiful views along the lake on the way. You can lunch at the Hermitage Hotel - the new cafe is a good cheaper option or go all out in the hotel dining room. There are some nice easy family walks up the valley to the base of the mountain or many more "full-on" adventures for older visitors. Spectacular views on a sunny winter day, but it's always hard to predict as cloud can roll in quickly.

Fantastic night-sky star-gazing tour to the Mt john Observatory. Expensive ($NZ215 for family of 4) but worth it. Dress warmly as you are outside a lot. Very knowledgeable staff are happy to explain what you are looking at - free hot chocolates were VERY welcome!

  • 4. Alpine Springs and Winterpark

New complex with hot pools (year round), ice skating rink and snowtubing slope (winter only). Very busy with locals on a weekend. You can sit in the pools and gaze over the lake. Kids loved snowtubing - a bit bruising but fun! there is a spa complex attache dfor massages and facials
