This Go List is supposed to give the traveller an overview of possible day trips from Frankfurt I find recommendable. All trips can possibly done between 9AM and 9PM by using the local transport system.
Take a train from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Ruedesheim. Have a quick look at the city, but be careful - it is a tourist trap. Get on board of one of the boats that go downstream, preferably to St. Goar and book a round trip. On your journey there are numerous castles and a lot of scenic landscape. Highly recommended on a nice day - best season: end of summer / early autumn
Possibly one of the nicest German cities. Not much more than one hour away by train. This city is situated in the scenic Neckar Valley and has a picturesque old town that is dominated by a beautiful castle. It is a tourist attraction but the city is big enough so that it does not appear to be run over by tourists.
One of the oldest German cities of Roman heritage. Nice old town and interesting sights and museums reflecting the Roman influence on Germany.
Also, a city with a long history and a nice old town. The Dome alone is worth a visit. This is the place the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl brought state guests to, because it was near his hometown and appeared to be attractive enough.
Really nice university town (almost as many students as inhabitants) dominated by a hill with a castle on top. Nice old town with numerous cafes and restaurants (the students need a place to drink, I guess) in small cobblestone streets.
Certainly off the beaten track and not a No. 1 tourist location, this is a small city east of Frankfurt. It used to be an important residence in the Middle Ages. Check here for details: http://www.gelnhausen.de/
In the northwest of Frankfurt, situated in the Taunus hills, this is a Roman fortification that can be visited. Recommended for historically interested people and people who are interested in hiking.
Nice destination for wine tastings and hiking.
Canoeing on the Lahn river is also a quite popular pastime for the residents of Frankfurt.
If you don't want to stay in bustling and modern Frankfurt, Mainz is an alternative. This city is almost as close to Frankfurt airport as Frankfurt itself and offers an more traditional flair.
