Interested in military history? This is a list of places in Calgary you may want to see.
Four sets of numbers are displayed on a hillside park in southwest Calgary, overlooking the Signal Hill Shopping Centre. Before the outbreak of WWI, the area below was the site of a large military training camp. Soldiers in training carried sacks of rocks up the hill to make up the large numbers. About 20 years ago, part of the hill was graded, and three of the numbers were replicated with the original stones once the work was complete. However, 137 is an original number on the original site.
A Sopwith Triplane (full scale reproduction), Avro Lancaster bomber, Harvard trainer, and F86 Sabre are some of the military aircraft on display. The museum iteslf is housed in an aircraft hanger which was built for WWII. A Rolls Royce Merlin engine (used in many WWII aircraft) and some WWI engines are the stars of the often-overlooked engine collection, on display in the mezzanine gallery.
