A week in the UK - without touching London!

May 11, 2006  Love to travel in these beautiful islands!

London might be a great city, but there are lots of other places well worth spending a week's vacation in the UK. Here are just a few of my favourites.

  • Explore locations featured in this Trip List: Edinburgh, North Yorkshire, Bushmills, Scottish Highlands
  • Category: Perfect week or more
  • Traveler type: Sightseeing, Active/Outdoors
  • Appeals to: Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Singles, Families with small children, Families with teenagers, Large groups, Seniors, Students, Budget travelers, Active/adventure, Tourists
  • Seasons: Summer
  • 1. Edinburgh
    Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, capital of Scotland, is a beautiful city to visit at any time of the year, but perhaps it's in the summer when you can see it at its best. A week's vacation would give you time to enjoy the shops, visit the Castle, go to the Military Tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival (DEFINITELY something you would want to include), get spooked on one of the ghost walks, see the Royal Yacht, climb Arthur's Seat, visit the ultra modern Scottish Parliament building, take a day trip to Loch Lomond... and indulge yourself with haggis, shortbread and whisky - or any other kind of food that takes your fancy in this very cosmopolitan city!

  • 2. North Yorkshire
    North Yorkshire

North Yorkshire is England's biggest and most beautiful county. Whether you want to wander on wild, heathery moorland; visit ruins of ancient castles and monastic houses; follow the Teashop Trail through villages and market towns; walk in the hills and dales; or stroll down the pier at one of North Yorkshire's beautiful East Coast seaside resorts, North Yorkshire has more than enough to entertain any visitor for a week. And that's without even going to the city of York - you'll need another week for that!

  • 3. Giant's Causeway (Northern Ireland)
    Giant's Causeway, Bushmills, County Antrim

The Giant's Causeway is just one of the places you would want to visit on a vacation in Northern Ireland. A stunning natural rock formation with a very interesting origin(!), it's just one of the places that make Antrim well worth investigating, along with many little seaside towns and beautiful glens. Just relax and take it at an easy pace - or if you want to see more, head into County Down and the Mountains of Morne, or over to Donegal where tweed is made, or even into Belfast itself.

  • 4. Scottish Highlands
    Scottish Highlands, Scotland

Rugged mountains, peaceful lochs and rushing streams...the Scottish Highlands are a place to really get away from everything. Good weather certainly can't be guaranteed, but scenery like this looks magnificent in all weathers! Top places to include in your tour: Ullapool (where you can get ferries to some of the islands); Glen Coe; Fort William; Loch Ness; Kinlochleven; Eileen Donan Castle (especially at sunset!) and Inverness.
