The best things to see and do and those to avoid.

1. Shipwreck Bay
The most famous site in Zakynthos.
2. Gerakas Beach
Home of the 'Caretta Caretta' turtle nesting sites.
3. Blue Caves
Possibly the second most famous site on the island.
4. Zakynthos Town
The most bustling place on the island. Here you can get boats and ferries to most major ports in Greece and Europe. You can also find some decent restaurants and historical sights.
5. Alykes
Possibly one of the best resorts on the island. A very friendly resort with a variety of restaurants. The sea is unbelievably clear and warm and the resort has pretty much everything you need.
6. Kampi
Famed to be the best place to see the sun set over the island. There is a hilltop restaurant here where you can eat, drink and watch night fall.
7. Keri and Limni Keriou
Keri is home to the largest Greek flag in the world located on top of the cliffs along with a lighthouse. Limni Keriou just down the road is a lovely little place with harbour and beach, the closest location to Marathonisi island and you can get boats from here. There is also a scuba diving centre here which is excellent.
8. Marathonisi (Turtle) Island
This is supposed to be the best place to see the native turtles on the island, but due to environmental damage the numbers are getting less and less. What makes matters worse are the tourists boats that come to see the turtles that often end up injuring them with the propeller blades. When a turtle is seen many boats will crowd round it often causing the animal distress. The best way to see them, if you do at all, is simply to snorkel near them but don't touch them or scare them. In order to protect them the best thing to do is simply not go see them, however tempting it may be.
9. Laganas
If you're looking for clubs and drunks in the middle of the day then laganas is perfect. However, if you want to see the best of Zakynthos avoid it like the plague. It is dirty, old and the most crime ridden place on the island (although crime overall is still relatively low). Many of the inconsiderate tourists here are what give English tourists a bad name, but that's not to say everyone who goes here is like that of course.
