Culinary Destinations in Boston

Sep 13, 2008  I want to try some the great non-chains!
4.5 of 5 stars based on 3 votes

The best restaurants in Boston and their specialties. Places I want to go, the dish on where I've been.

  • 1. The Elephant Walk
    The Elephant Walk, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Specialty: Any of the French Menu items.

Cambodian and French cuisines. Several dining options including an affordable 3 course fixed-price that highlights their specialty dishes. Very good food, quarters are a little cramped.

  • 2. Anna's Taqueria
    Anna's Taqueria, Somerville, Massachusetts

    Specialty: Chicken Quesadilla

So good, and so cheap. Get the quesadilla - it's not the flat kind. They take a tortilla and fry it on the grill, then they stuff it full of whatever you want, burrito style. You'll never go back to Chipotle again. Their quesadilla is the best burrito I've ever had.

  • 3. Wild Willy's Burgers
    Wild Willy's Burgers, Watertown, Massachusetts

    Specialty: The Burgers!
Really good burger chain with new location in Needham. I had a chicken salad there and the grilled chicken was really good. I tried a bite of mushroom/cheese burger and it may have been the best burger I've ever tasted. Very buttery and melt-in-your-mouth. Do yourself a favor and eat the burger in the restaurant. The atmosphere is sort of cowboy animatronics, but the bun and the burger will get a little buit soggy if you go for take out.

  • 4. L'Espalier
    L'Espalier, Boston, Massachusetts

Specialty: Don't know, but they have a reasonably priced lunch.

Went here for lunch because they offer a $30 tasting menu. It was pretty good; I had some duck and a salad and a cupcake turned upside down. I'm sure that it would be amazing for dinner; the real draw of this place was the 5 star service and the secret-fancy-club atmosphere and location on swanky Newbury Street.

  • 5. The Real Deal
    The Real Deal, Boston, Massachusetts

    Specialty: grilled deli sandwiches

Great deli that makes everything - pizza, sandwiches, paninis, salads, burgers and wraps. Try the Uncle Junior. The pizza is good for feeding crowds, they're bigger than the average large.

  • 6. Sugar Bakery

    Specialty: Brambles and Italian Pastry

Bakery attached to the Real Deal Deli in West Roxbury. They are known for their brambles, but my favorites are anything made with their chocolate ganache frosting, like the half moons and the chocolate cupcakes. Their classic vanilla cupcakes are good too and the cannolis are great, they'll fill them to order for you.

  • 7. Spring Street Cafe
    Spring Street Cafe, Boston, Massachusetts

    Specialty: Spring Street French toast.

Love this place for breakfast. Love it. The french toast is more like a delicious bread pudding, and the grilled english muffins and regular old scrambled eggs are amazing. Home fries are well seasoned and never bland and grainy.

  • 8. Sunset Grill & Tap
Sunset Grill & Tap, Boston, Massachusetts

    Specialty: Chicken Quesadilla

I've planned a cheat day to eat Mexican food here in late October. I've been looking at the menu and I am so excited. The specialty here is the chicken quesadilla; I'm going to get it with some nachos.

  • 9. Blue Ginger
    Blue Ginger, Wellesley, Massachusetts

    Specialty: Upscale Asian fusion

    This is Ming Tsai's Restaurant!

  • 10. Zaftigs Delicatessen
    Zaftigs Delicatessen, Brookline, Massachusetts

Specialty: Breakfast; specifically the Almond Crusted French Toast

The line to get breakfast here on weekends is very long, but word is that it's worth the wait.

  • 11. Halfway Cafe
    Halfway Cafe, Dedham, Massachusetts

Specialty: Fresh cut fries, burgers, boneless wings
Wanted to try it as this is their original location and they're all over the phantom gourmet. I have to say I was a little bit disappointed. The fries were soggy (granted I was late picking them up) and the fish I ordered wasn't that great. Probably better if you get a burger.

  • 12. Omni Parker House
    Omni Parker House, Boston, Massachusetts

Inventor of the Boston cream pie. I'm usually not a huge fan of this desert, but I'm excited to try the real thing.

  • 13. Garden At The Cellar
Garden At The Cellar, Cambridge, Massachusetts

    Specialty: Use of local produce.

All menu items are made of local ingredients, even in the winter.

  • 14. Carl's Steak Subs
    Carl's Steak Subs, Waltham, Massachusetts

Specialty: Philly Cheese Steaks, outside of Philly

  • 15. Kelly's Roast Beef
    Kelly's Roast Beef, Revere, Massachusetts

Specialty: the roast beef. This is the original location of a Boston institution. Finally got to try it, not sure what the fuss is about. Dry, plain. Literally a lot of gray beef on a sesame seeds bun. It doesn't come standard with any sauce, make sure that you ask for some.

  • 16. The Pizza Barn

    Specialty: Farm - themed Pizzas

People talk about this place like the family jewels. Their parents ate pizza there, now they go there, and they take their kids there. It's supposed to have amazing pizza and "The Farmer's Daughter" is rumored to weight 13 pounds.

    1860 Route 16
    Center Ossipee, NH 03814

  • 17. Oak Room Restaurant
OAK Long Bar + Kitchen, Boston, Massachusetts

Specialty: Old school streaks and and old school atmosphere

This place was mentioned in the Devil Wears Prada and now I want to go.

  • 18. Fuji Steak House
    Fuji Steak House, Needham, Massachusetts

Specialty: Hibachi grill and sushi boats
