Hamburg Must Do's

May 10, 2006  Ex-pat life in Germany
4.0 of 5 stars based on 7 votes

A few of my favourite things to do in Hamburg that gives a flavour of the city, when in Hamburg, do as the Hamburgers!

  • Category: Perfect weekend
  • Traveler type: Culture, Sightseeing, Shopping, Never been before
  • Appeals to: Business travelers, Couples/romantics, Singles, Large groups, Students, Tourists
  • Seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall
  • 1. Elbe Cruise

Go to Landungsbruecken and take a tour round the harbour and gaze up in awe at the size of the container ships unloading their goods from the far east. Add on a "fleet" cruise through the canals of Hamburg and learn facts like that Hamburg has nore bridges than Venice and Amsterdam.

  • 2. Rathaus Tour

Take a tour of the Hamburg Town Hall, built in the 19th Century replacing the old one that was burnt down in a fire. Guided tours (also in English) throughout the day.

  • 3. Shopping!

Shopping in Hamburg is an experience in itself, from big department stores like Karstadt and Alsterhaus, to the designer shops around Jungfernsteig and Neuer Wall.

  • 4. Christmas Markets

In the four weeks before Christmas visit Hamburgs various Christmas Markets, the biggest is in front of the Rathaus, but others are dotted around the city.

  • 5. Fischmarkt

Unique to Hamburg is the Fischmarkt, not only a place to buy fish and anything else, but also where revellers go to finish their Saturday night. A visual and cultural hotchpotch that starts at 4am on Sunday morning and is finished by 9am!
