Palm Springs.....Only in California

May 9, 2006  Native Southern Californian who loves PS so much we honeymooned there.
2.5 of 5 stars based on 6 votes

Experience this desert oasis like the Hollywood royalty who made this their little secret, not like a tourista. It's a lot more fun.

If you are looking for the perfect California weekend, Palm Springs is the destination and the Ingleside is your lodging. This is a PS classic. Very, old Hollywood (Garbo, Sinatra, etc.), but in the best sense. They still take care of you like these stars escaped to PS to be treated. A very intimate inn with only 30 suites and villas with fireplaces, fully stocked refrigerators (complementary), and furnished with antiques. Melvyn's restaurant onsite has been called one of the Ten Best in the World by Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous. It is a small secluded hideway right off of the main street in Palm Springs, you have to know what you're looking for to find it, but once you do you feel like Hollywood royalty. The perfect retreat for the perfect weekend.

Okay, Mr. Gable, you've checked into your room. Let's go for a drive. Make a call to the front desk and request that the hotel limo (that's the Rolls limo) take you to Luxury Rent A Car and take your pick: Jag, Mercedes, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Viper...or maybe you really are classic Hollywood..how 'bout a '69 Cadillac Deville Convertible? Thank you...Thank you very much.

  • 3. El Paseo Shopping District
El Paseo Shopping District, Palm Desert

Now let's take that pimp ride of yours and cruise on over to El Paseo and wander through a mile or so of shops that make Rodeo Drive look old hat. Several great places to stop for a cool drink also.

  • 4. Las Casuelas Terraza
    Las Casuelas Terraza, Palm Springs

Lunch time! Cruise on back to the main drag (Palm Canyon Drive) and sit under the misters of the best place to people watch and also the location of the best Margarita in town. Try any of the enchiladas, you won't be disappointed.

  • 5. Palm Canyon Drive
    Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs

So, Compadre, ze tummy is full, and ze auto is waiting. You are on one the best cruising streets in the country. Let's add this up; Southern California, sunshine, the beautiful people, and a classy convertible on a palm lined street???? WhooYa! You can choose to stretch this through the adjoining cities of Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, Indio (okay, now you've gone too far)

Glide through the Begonia lined circular drive of your private estate (well, it does feel like one...it really does....okay just humor me.) and before you retire to your room, check in at Melvyn's (where Frank & Nancy had their wedding reception) and make a reservation (yes, they are highly recommended). Then spend a few hours lounging (in the best sense of the word) on the manicured lawn that runs right up to pool. You will be pampered by a 2 attendants/guest ratio with whatever your heart desires, even if that includes not being disturbed. When we were there on our honeymoon, we were sharing the poolside with Belinda Carlisle (of The Go-Gos fame) also there on her honeymoon.

  • 7. Melvyn's
Melvyn's Restaurant & Lounge, Palm Springs

Plan on making an event of it. You will probably never dine with a more experienced staff and will consequently be treated to one of the best meals of your life. (no really)
Try the Steak Diane. Cooked tableside and to perfection. Don't rush off after dinner either, slide on over to the piano bar. A really hip place and the perfect martini. Stroll back to your room and sit on your private patio and watch the stars that only the California desert can show you.

  • 8. Indian Canyons
    Indian Canyons, Palm Springs

Don't sleep too late, because it's best to hit the canyons while it's still cool in the morning. This is the closest your going to come to a tourist attraction on this trip, but you can't get a better glimpse at old California than these canyons and the creeks that run through them. Melvyns will pack you a lunch to take with you (Can you tell I'm kinda fond of 'ol Melvyn?)

Take your time showin' off your wheels on the way back, but do get back to just chill out at the pool. This will be the most relaxing place you've ever been that didn't involve mud on your face. Don't be in such a hurry to not just slow down and soak up the peacefulness along with your California sunshine. If you didn't eat lunch yet, just ask them to set you up a table poolside and enjoy. Spend the rest of the day right where you are and you will thank me.

  • 10. Zelda's Nightclub & Beach Club
    Zelda's Nightclub, Palm Springs

You are so relaxed that you just don't know if you will ever walk again. But talk yourself back into that ultra cool ride with your name on the rental agreement and shoot on over to Zelda's. This place is not old school Hollywood, but you could definately picture Travolta in his white Angel Flights. This is THE hot spot in town and you can sit and watch or work up a sweat, your choice. Have fun. Don't forget to go for a stroll down Palm Canyon before you head back to your room, on a Spring/Summer weekend night a slow walk down this street with it;s shops, cafes and clubs is one of the best true Calfornia experiences you will have. Enjoy!
