* means I've been, otherwise they are cemeteries on my "to do" list
*This huge cemetery has a great variety of stones and statuary and the location is really idyllic.
* Excellent cemetery with a huge number of mausoleums and great statuary.
*Probably the most famous American (non-military) cemetery. And it's in Georgia! The setting is lovely along the water, with old trees draped in Spanish Moss, sandy roads and large statuary. It has great variety, and some really interesting ethnic sections.
*Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Rome, GA - Excellent cemetery. It really is located on a hill, and quite a hill it is. It has a fair amount of very nice statuary, a nice civil war section and a few unusual tombstones. But it's main attraction is really the location and the landscaping, it all just has a really nice feel to it. Rating 8/10.
*Lovely medium sized cemetery with an interesting variety of stones and symbols in lovely location. Surprising gem of a cemetery.
*Oconee Hill Cemetery - a lovely long cemetery that just keeps winding farther and farther. The oldest section is quite modest, but well preserved. But as you keep finding different sections the style change, too. A pleasant surprise of a cemetery, but the caretakers are very unfriendly and likely to throw you out for loitering (what else are you supposed to do in a cemetery?)
*Rest Haven Cemetery - An interesting cemetery along the railroad tracks. The oldest section has an unusually large variety of stones with a variety of imagery. The African-American section is also quite interesting. Worth a trip.
*Memory Hill Cemetery, Milledgeville, GA - Huge number of graves in a very compact area. The heyday of the cemetery was apparently before cemeteries became particularly artistic. It is filled with obelisks and almost no statuary. Probably a dozen willow tree motifs. Flannery O'Conner is the most famous resident. Nice landscaping.
*Greensboro has a large cemetery hidden in the side streets and worth a look. Some unusual varieties of stones and interesting details make this worth the trip.
*Marietta City Cemetery and Confederate Cemetery - Cemetery has an interesting mix of images and stones. African American stones are mixed in within the mainstream stones. Nice landscaping, the worst aspect is that it is along an exceptionally busy, noisy road. Most famous resident in Little Mary Phagan who was murdered and the trial of her boss was a nationwide tabloid-like sensation.
*Old Madison Cemetery - which is actually adjacent to New Cemetery, Fairview Cemetery and Madison Memorial. You can take a walk through the history and the progression of American cemeteries all in one spot. The Old Cemetery has iron fences, and some huge memorials along with the really old styles of tombstone that are interesting in their simplicity. Then cross the railroad tracks and you are in the New Cemetery (which is now pretty old) and see the styles about the turn of the 20th century. Then over to Fairview to see the mid 20th century styles, and then over to Memorial, with the brass placards on the ground that a mower can just whiz on over. Not bad for a smallish town.
*The oldest cemetery in Georgia in the middle of Savannah. It has some death's head symbols (very rare in the South) and a snake eating it's own tale. Otherwise most of the artwork is Willow trees and urns.
* Mount Hope Cemetery - not but a couple of blocks from the main square, beyond the college is the old Mount Hope Cemetery. It is certainly not huge, but a reasonable size to spend an hour looking at. Most famously known for some "Slot and Tab" grave markers, found only in this part of the country. Also an interesting mix of old and new grave markers.
* Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson, GA - Downtown Jefferson, rises the cemetery hill with a really large tree in the center. A few large or unusual stones, and a very interesting "mourner" statue. Not worth a special trip, but not a bad place to stop if it's along your way.
*Marietta National Cemetery - Until recently this was the only National Cemetery for veterans in Georgia. Also would go to the Marietta City Cem and Marietta Confederate Cem, not too far away.
*Rest Haven Cemetery - A fair old cemetery, surrounded by auto repair shops and recycling plants. There a few interesting stones, including a monument to a Civil War soldier with a full size statue on the top (male statues in cemeteries are not common).
* Toccoa City Cemetery, Toccoa, GA - Although it is very large in size for the city, it only has a few interesting stones. Stop by if you already happen to be in town.
*Rose Hill Cemetery - Not a rose or hill in sight. Has very little interesting statuary, but does have a small exedra.
