Memorable highlights from an adventurous vacation in Ecuador, exploring Quito and the Galapagos Islands.
Most international flights to Ecuador arrive in Quito, the country's largest city, rich in history and culture. It is one of the two gateways - along with Guayaquil - to the Galapagos Islands. Be prepared to arrange for a taxi ride to your hotel in Spanish - few drivers or airport personnel speak English.
This small hotel has uniquely designed, intimate rooms, a beautiful peacock that lives on the property, a restaurant serving tasty food, and a friendly and helpful English-speaking staff.
You'll have to get up very early to catch the daily morning flight from Quito to Galapagos. You'll land on either the island of Baltra or San Cristobal.
Nearly all of the hotels and resorts in Galapagos are located on the island of Santa Cruz. It's a brief ferry ride from Baltra, and a strenuous 3-hour ferry ride from San Cristobal. Be prepared to arrange for your ferry ticket in Spanish, as very few locals speak English.
Puerto Ayora is the main town on Santa Cruz and most of the island's hotels, shops and restaurants are located here, along Avenida Charles Darwin. Everything in town is within walking distance from the port where you will arrive, although taxis (white pick-up trucks) are readily available for a fare of $1.00.
This small and friendly hotel has a wonderful location at the north end of Avenida Charles Darwin, just a short walk from the Charles Darwin Research Station.
This nature reserve is open to the public and there is no admission fee. Walk among the giant Galapagos tortoises that live here, as well as the marine iguanas that sunbathe on the lava rocks on th e beach.
After a 2-mile walk from Puerto Ayora, you'll arrive at a peaceful white-sand beach along beautiful blue ocean water. You can spot marine iguanas along the rocks, tropical fish in the water, and if you're lucky, flamingos in the nearby marsh.
Visit the Sub-Aqua dive center in Puerto Ayora and arrange for a dive with Macarron, a popular and highly-recommended English-speaking instructor. Academy Bay and other nearby dive sites in the Galapagos offer extraordinary underwater worlds.
Located in Punta Estrada, a short water taxi ride from Puerto Ayora, this secluded resort is an oasis offering luxuries not found anywhere else on the island.
After leaving the Galapagos Islands, you'll fly back to Quito before heading home. Before you go, visit the Old Town, where Quito was founded nearly five centurieas ago, and see the historic Spanish colonial architecture.
