UK in Two Weeks

Dec 29, 2007  Wife To A Brit, Mom of 2 and Avid Traveler
4.5 of 5 stars based on 3 votes

Have you ever wondered what to do in the UK after you have done "London"? This is a list of some of the nooks and crannies in the UK that are must see's. My list is geared towards those that want to see small towns, cathedrals, castles in ruin, and other small sites. I try to avoid the overly touristy areas (aside from Stratford-upon-Avon).

Gas prices are expensive, but the good thing is that the country isn't that big by "American" standards. You can go all the way to the East, South, or West and back in a day easily and unless you are doing tons of mountain driving (mostly to the North and Wales) you won't use up too much gas, because the cars are also more efficient.

It's best to start out in one central location and branch out for daily trips. I split my trip into two by staying one week in England and another week in Wales. It's best of course to rent a car, have some knowledge of driving on UK roads, a GPS unit, and a little explorer in your blood is always a good thing. It's well worth all the driving, which can be boring at times. If you plan your trip carefully, you can accomplish 2-3 sites in one day to make things more interesting.

There are millions of things to see and do in the UK. My husband lived there 27 years of his life and we still find new things to do each time we return. This is a small list by many standards, but feel free to go off the beaten path and you may find more hidden treasures!

  • 1. Worcester Cathedral
    Worcester Cathedral, Worcester, Worcestershire

A spectacular cathedral located on the Severn River. There are beautiful swans and ducks that swim by gracefully. The ancient bells that line the outer halls are something excellent - they date back many centuries. Take a walk down by the river and you will see flood levels marked on the walls and it is so amazing to see how high the water gets.

  • 2. Collegiate Church of St Mary's (Warwick Cathedral)
Collegiate Church of St Mary's, Warwick, Warwickshire

Try not to get lost when figuring out where to park for this cathedral. It is worth the fuss though! The grounds are wonderful and the crypt in the basement is awesome!

  • 3. Rollright Stones
    Rollright Stones, Oxfordshire, England

This is one of England's hidden treasures that not many folks know about it. These stone circles date to pre-Stonehenge times, so there is more history! They are kind of in the middle of nowhere, and the views are breathtaking when the fog is good or the sun is shining brightly.

  • 4. Malvern
    Malvern, Worcestershire

The Malverns are a beautiful place to visit. When driving down to it from the North it seems like a large hill in the middle of flat lands. Explore the Malverns, there are lots of things to see! The Malvern Priory is an awesome cathedral to visit!

  • 5. Stratford-upon-Avon
    Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

  • 6. Tewkesbury
    Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire

  • 7. Berkeley Castle
    Berkeley Castle, Berkeley, Cotswolds

  • 8. St. Gregory Cathedral

A lovely little cathedral located just north of Shipston-on-Stour near the A429 and Stratford Road.

  • 9. West Midlands Safari and Leisure Park
West Midlands Safari and Leisure Park, Bewdley, Worcestershire

  • 10. Evesham
    Evesham, Worcestershire

  • 11. Saxon Sanctuary

A very nice church located on the A3400 just south of Henly-in-Arden, which is also another great little town to walk up the main street on! The Saxon Sanctuary dates back many hundreds of years and is still an active church.

  • 12. Manchester
    Manchester, Greater Manchester

  • 13. Hailes Abbey
    Hailes Abbey, Gloucester, Gloucestershire

  • 14. Sunny Sands Caravan Park
    http://www.sunnysands.co.uk

This is a very nice caravan park in Wales just north of Barmouth. You can get a nice 2 bedroom caravan on the shores of Cardigan Bay (opens to the Atlantic Ocean). This park comes equipped with a lovely cafe (good English breakfast), an indoor swimming pool, and a nightclub for young folks. The views of the Welsh mountains are spectacular as they surround the park on the coast!

  • 20. Shell Island, Wales
    http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/2199/1001993ab2.jpg

Shell Island is a small "island" north of Barmouth Wales. What makes it an island is when the tide comes in it floods everything around it and makes it inaccessible certain times of the day.

You can find all sorts of different shells, so if you are a shell collector, this is the place to go! TIP: Go to the North side of the "island" to get your shells, because that's where the folks in the gift shop get their shells from!

  • 21. Yes it's real: Llanfairpw llgwyngyllgogerychw yrndrobwllllantysiliogogo goch (minus spaces)
    http://img170.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1001974he3.jpg

The church of mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the fierce whirlpool and the church of Tsyilio by the red cave. Yes that is what that translates too, and it's supposed to be one of the longest named towns in the world. Otherwise simply known as Llanfair in Wales.

If you are going to Wales, it is on the Isle of Anglesy just across the Menai Bridge. It's a must see stop on the way to Holyhead.

  • 22. Holyhead
    Holyhead, Island of Anglesey

    Image 1: http://tinyurl.com/yojv7b

Holyhead, Wales is located at the tip of the Isle of Anglesy. It is a very picturesque place and they even offer tours of the beautiful lighthouse at the bottom of the cliff!

  • 23. Beaumaris Castle
Beaumaris Castle, Beaumaris, Island of Anglesey

This is a really pretty castle with a moat and everything! Nothing is better than seeing the beauty of a castle in ruins, AND having a moat full of water. Your typical castle in the UK may have a ring around it where a moat used to be, but this one still has a beautiful moat. Enchant your young ones with stories of monsters (crocs or dragons) in the moat protecting the castle... he he.

  • 24. Beaumaris Jail / Prison
    http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8708/1001944wz2.jpg

Beaumaris Jail has a lot of history to it. It was recently featured on several ghost hunting television programs as being very haunted. I didn't get that impression when I was there, but it is an interesting place to visit. Located a short walking distance from Beaumaris Castle in Beaumaris, Wales.
