A short, hot trip to Key West

Dec 4, 2007  10th anniversary on the cheap with our dog.
2.0 of 5 stars based on 14 votes

We went to Key West in August to celebrate our tenth anniversary. We wanted to go somewhere we could take our dog and that we hadn't been to before. We loved Key West but it's probably better in the winter. It was so hot! We rented bikes which is great in Key West because the land is so flat that biking is a breeze, and the island is so small you can get almost anywhere on your bikes, much easier than driving and trying to find a place to park.

Decent place. Not great, but they allowed us to bring our dog. I think dog friendly hotels are inherently less nice. The price was right - but that's what's nice about traveling to FL in the summer.

  • 2. Mallory Square
Mallory Square, Key West, Florida Keys

Not really worth it, though the sunset is very nice. This place is crowded and the acts aren't so special.

This place is amazing. We ate here twice. I still think about the Unwing Dings and the Sweet Potato Fries.

  • 4. Dog Beach
Dog Beach, Key West, Florida Keys

Very small beach, but it's fun to let your dog go for a dip in the water. It's kind of hard to find.

  • 5. Publix

This is the best supermarket ever! Whenever in FL, we stop in for some sandwiches from the deli. I've never had a better sandwich anywhere! Also while there, we picked up a key lime pie and some treats to bring to friends as gifts. The treats are good quality and much cheaper than at the gift shops.

This is a must. Climb to the top and see the whole island and beyond.

Take your bike here. There is a great bike trail along the water. Also a great place to swim. The water is clear, calm, and warm. This is a state park, so there is a natural forest that you won't see at most FL beaches these days. Very pretty.

Decent ghost tour. Good way to hear about the history of key west. Some things are scary, like Robert the Doll.

  • 9. Old Town Trolly Tour

we went because we had free tickets. They take you around town but it's not really worth the price, and the tour guides aren't that interesting.

  • 10. Southernmost Point
Southernmost Point, Key West, Florida Keys

Nice view, but it doesn't take long and then you have to wait around for the next trolly. Not really worth getting off the trolly for.

Take the free elevator ride to the top to get a good view of the city and the water. Definitely worth it since it's free.

  • 12. Higgs Beach Dog Park

Nice dog park with chairs and lots of trees and grass. Separate areas for small dogs. Free.

  • 13. National Key Deer Refuge

Not very far from Key West if you have a car. We actually saw quite a few deer, and they are very small. Cute and worth it. Free.
