1. La Jolla Shores Hotel (formerly Sea Lodge Hotel)
Ave price: $334
A nice hotel on one of my fav beaches. Rent a car or a motorcycle, see the Zoo and the rest of Balboa Park, Wild Animal Park and or Seaworld. When you're ready, get a Map of the Western States (AAA) Drive through Glamis and Prescott to Sedona.
Ave price: $153
A nice motel, right in the center of town. Get a room on the creek. Eat Italian at the Hideaway. Have the rattle snake appetizer at the Cowboy. Walk down to the Crystal Palace for a reading and some crystals. Don't miss the Chapel built right into the red rocks. If you want more stars, you can find them online but you will do more driving. Do a Vortex tour. This place (Sedona) is Special. When you are ready, drive out to the South Rim. Cameron Corners is a good place for souvenirs. Then through Monument Valley to Mexican Hat.
Basic accomadations, just North of Monument Valley. Make sure you get some Navajo fry bread at the retaurant. Head for the North Rim.
4. Grand Canyon North Rim
The north rim is 1200 ft higher than the south rim, so you are in a forest. There's only one way in and out and it's closed in the winter, so it's not as crowded. There are 2 large patios to view sunrises and sunsets from. Get a Western cabin, they are nicer and closer to the rim. These are National Parks, the quality of the rooms and food can be hit and miss. Get dinner reservations ahead of time, this dining room has a great view.
5. Bryce Canyon Lodge
Get up to watch the sunrise. More walking here than the other places, rock formations and colors are spectacular.
6. Zion National Park
These places are so close together and yet so different. Do your homework, lot's of great hikes, here. Make sure you do the canyon view hike at the east entrance to the tunnel. The best shots are am and early afternoon.
Ave price: $231
No trip is complete, without a stop here. Even if you don't drink or gamble, this place is over the top. Vegas is MUCH cheaper during the week. Get a Signature suite, prepare to be blown away. Everything here is a long walk. Check out the 2 trams. Hoover Dam makes a nice day trip. You can visit Disneyland and Hollywood on your way back. What a wonderful world...
