We stayed at the AI in July 2007. Our previous visits to the area were nice but the resorts we too big. The Catalonia RM is a wonderful resort that has the amenities of the larger AIs but without the tons of walking. We stayed in one of the suites and are very glad we spent the little extra money to do so. It was a nice oasis to escape the heat in July and the bed was the most comfortable I have slept on in Mexico. The food at the buffet was what we have experienced before at the Riu properties, possibly better. We ate at the Mexican and Italian specialty restaraunts and enjoyed them both. You absolutely must go to the Crepe place....it was wonderful!! The pools and grounds were very clean. We enjoyed the lagoon area as it was a good place to snorkel. The beach area was on the small side but I never felt like it was crowded.

  • 2. Coba

We enjoyed our visit to the Coba ruins. Our 9 year old son had a great time and we were able to climb to the top of one of the ruins. I am not afraid of heights but this was a bit scarey once you look down and realize you have to go down those small steps....I ended up doing the back-end slide like a sissy. None the less, the view is amazing at the top and I am very glad we did it. This visit also helped us appreciate the Mexican culture and especially the people in the Yucatan.

    Puerto Aventuras

This is a gated community south of Playa Del Carmen. It is a quaint town with a lot of character and characters. You can walk around the marina and see dolphins and sea lions. We enjoyed going to Gringo Dave's in the evening to catch the sunset with the dolphins swimming. This was also a good place to people watch. We met some nice people who live there and they were very helpful. There are little shops and restaraunts in the marina area and I enjoyed the feeling of a small, sleepy community. It is such a contrast to Playa Del Carmen, PA doesn't have all the vendors hanging in the street trying to lure you into their shops. It is much more laid back.
