  • 1. red island

small island off thre coast of rovinj croatia. Rovinj has few beaches, although it is a lovely place. We went on the ferry, which runs every hour, to Red Island, where there is a large hotel with bars and cafes available for all to use. There are more beaches there, although all are rocky and beach , non slip footwear is needed at all times. It is great for swimmers but not so good for learners as the sea does not stay shallow for long and the rocks are a little difficult to negotiate . A pleasant place though and many tourists and locals go there to relax ans swim.

  • 2. day trip to venice

a trip on a ferry from rovinj to venice. This was taken midweek on a hot day. The ferry left at 9 am and arrived in Venice at 12 noon. We had 5 hours to ourselves, although there were extra options available to trippers at an extra cost. We chose not to take the lunch option or the water taxi back to the boat but did go for the gondola ride for £15 each. It was very hot and crowded in Venice and we abandoned the talk in St Mark';s Square in favour of searching out a samll cafe away from the crowds. This was difficult but we managed to get a seat noit too far away for an indifferent snack. The gondola ride proved a highlight as it was great to escape the crowds and have a bit of peace and quiet. It was a relief to get back on the air conditioned boat at the end of the day but the journey back seemed very long. It was a relief to get back to Rovinj to be honest. Worth the trip if you have to see venice but, as I'd been before, it was a bit of a mistake really and spoilt my memories of the place.

  • 3. where to eat and drink

places to eat. There are a huge number of restaurants and cafes in rovinj, most serving the same type of food. The seafood is best, particularly the calamari and many are situated in lovely locations with sea views. They are inexpensive and informal but beware of 2 menus: one for the tourist and one for the locals! This is the same in some of the shops where prices are not displayed. Be prepared to barter! Coffees are cheap, about 7.5kuna, which is 75p for espresso and about the same for cappuchino. Try the ices, italian in style, at 5 kuna a scoop. Delicious.
