Sydney, Australia

Aug 18, 2007  The sights, sounds, people, and feelings I experience in Australia inspire me.
3.5 of 5 stars based on 8 votes

I fell in love with Australia at first sight, and this is a list of places in Sydney I've been to and would like to go to!

  • Category: Best of
  • Traveler type: Culture, Sightseeing, Shopping, Active/Outdoors, Never been before, Repeat visitors, Beachgoers
  • Appeals to: Business travelers, Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Singles, Families with small children, Families with teenagers, Students, Budget travelers, Active/adventure, Tourists

  • 1. Lindt Chocolat Cafe
    http://grabyourfork.blogspot.com/2004/12/lindt-concept-store-sydney.ht...

Swiss chocolate is heavenly, and this place is a Chocoholic's dream...or wet dream, depending on blah, blah blah...anyway, I had the Iced Milk Chocolate. Yum! Unfortunately, this "concept store" doesn't have an official home page, but the link I found has some great photos and gives you an idea of what's on the menu. I've only been here once (the location at Martin's Place), but I'd like to go back. There's another location at Cockle Bay Wharf.

  • 2. Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk
    http://www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/council/parks/parks/coastwalk.asp

When you want to take a leisurely walk alone or with a friend or with a significant other (whenever, whatever!), this is an uber cool idea. The shoreline is incredible and this cliff walk is breathtaking. Along the way you can stop at a cafe for a coffee (or tea), take a dip or gaze at the awesome Bronte Baths, and in November, marvel at Sculpture by the Sea.

  • 3. Sydney By Diva Tours
    http://sydneybydivatours.com/ABOUT/about.html

Each time I've visited Sydney, I've promised myself that I would take this tour...I haven't, yet. But, I WILL next time! How unique is it to view Sydney from a Drag Queen's point of view? (I hope that term isn't offensive.) Anyway, for $100 (AUS) you get a 3-hour city tour, a diva hostess/guide, a cabin boy/girl serving you champagne & canapes, and a brand new wig you get to keep forever and ever!

  • 4. Minus 5 Ice Lounge
    http://www.minus5experience.com/

I've heard great things about this place, and I can't wait to go! I'm ready to slip on a parka and warm up with a tasty drink and thrilling, good conversation...what about you?

  • 5. Wagamama
    http://www.wagamama.com.au/locations/showlocation/599

Noodles, noodles, and more noodles...just slurp 'em up, turn up the bowl, and feel the warm, soothing broth go down to warm your tummy. This chain of eateries started in London back in the 90s. Warm, healthy fare satisfies, especially on a chilly day or evening. Have some plum wine, dammit!

  • 6. Sydney Explorer Bus Services / Bondi Explorer Bus Services / Sydney Pass
    http://www.sydneybuses.info/tourist-services/sydney-explorer.htm

This is the best introduction to Sydney and its eastern beach suburbs. The Sydney Explorer will take you around the center of Sydney and the Bondi Explorer will take you to the eastern suburbs and of course the world famous BONDI BEACH. The Sydney pass is a good investment if you're interested in doing both services. Other added bonuses -- you can use the regular bus, ferry, and CityRail services with the pass.
The buses are clean, comfortable, and in Summer they're air-conditioned. You can hop on and hop off at leisure, and the service runs all day. If you miss the last bus, there's no problem because your pass works on ALL city transport. The drivers are cool and give added commentary to the recorded commentary. This is how I learned the lay of the land during one of my "extended" stays in Sydney. This is a must do!

  • 7. Open Air Cinema
    http://www.stgeorgeopenair.com.au/posters/

Let's go to the movies!!! In Sydney, in summer, it's fun to catch a film outdoors in the park, near Mrs. Macquaries Chair, surrounded by green and blue -- the park and the sea. This is a great activity to break up the monotony of doin' what you do.

  • 8. Coogee Beach
    http://members.optusnet.com.au/mons1/

Yes, Bondi Beach is world famous, but if you travel a few miles further, you'll encounter Coogee, and this I prefer. It has a great beach (I know, it's hard to find a bad one in Sydney, but...), and great shops & restaurants...grab a little fish and chips or golden, battered prawns, a VB, and sit on the sand for a quick picnic. The key here is that it's less crowded. This is a must visit!

  • 9. Harry's Cafe de Wheels
    http://www.nsw.nationaltrust.org.au/harryscafe.html

This little pie cart is a Sydney icon that has been around for over 60 years! Eating here and hanging out at 3 am is part of the Sydney experience. During my first visit I was a bit of a chicken and I didn't try the famous pie floater...mainly because I was hungry and wasn't in the mood to be disappointed. On my second visit, I went for it and had the pie floater, which consisted of a meat pie floating upside down in a mush of peas with a few dabs of tomato sauce. It didn't look very appetizing, but it was pretty tasty. While you're munching down, take a look at all of the photos of the famous people who have eaten here. When visiting Sydney, give Harry's a try. It's right on the Woolloomoo Finger Wharf, near Russell Crowe's digs.

  • 10. Baha'i Temple
    http://hubpages.com/hub/the-bahai-temple

Unfortunately, I've never made time to visit this place to quench my spiritual thirst while in Sydney, but I will make it a point to go there next year (2008).

  • 11. Getaway Sailing Lessons & Pacific Sailing School
    http://www.getaway-sailing.com/

"...Set sail with me, to a paradise out beyond the sea..." a line from one of my favorite songs of all time by The Isley Brothers. I want to learn to sail, and next time I'm in Sydney, I'm going for it! These places teach novices like me...Ripper!
For a less expensive alternative take a look at the website for Pacific Sailing School: type in 3 w's.pacificsailingschool dot com dot au -- that will take you there.

  • 12. Quarantine Ghost Station - Sydney
    http://www.paranormalaustralia.com/tours/qstation.html

I want to take this tour next time I'm in Sydney. I've heard some great ghost stories about this place, and I want to find out for myself if it is as chilling as they say. Scare me, I say, scare me...

  • 13. DOYLE'S RESTAURANTS
    http://www.doyles.com.au/index.asp

Okay, this is one of the best seafood restaurants I've ever been to! There are several Sydney locations, but I went to the original location, Watson's Bay on the beach. It's literally on the beach and it's beautiful! This is a family-owned restaurant that's been around for 5 generations. Try the Lobster & Prawn Salad, and the Jumbo Prawns -- stuffed with cheese, bacon, fruit, pine nuts, and breadcrumbs. The fish and chips jam! Try a lovely piece of John Dory and/or Barramundi fish while you're in Australia.

  • 14. Paddington Markets
    http://www.paddingtonmarkets.com.au/

"We're S-H-O-P-P-I-N-G, we're shopping" -- to quote a line from a Pet Shop Boys' song. This place has great atmosphere, and reminds me of the markets in London Towne...open every Saturday and easy to get to with a little public transport and walking.

  • 15. Manly Beach
    http://www.manlyweb.com.au/

What a great reason to make your way to Circular Quay to grab a ferry! This is a cool, laid back suburb of Sydney that shouldn't be missed. During a visit, I witnessed a "Salvation Army" type band playing/singing the song "Let's Groove Tonight" by Earth, Wind & Fire...quite interesting, ahem. Anyway, the beach was glorious, the atmosphere was warm and bustling with life, and the public toilet was unlike no other I've been to. It was so state of the art...the door slid open, with a quick, smooth, spaceship type of motion, a voice greeted me, and basically told me how long I should take to handle my business. My quoted time was reasonable, but I have to wonder what would have happened if my time had expired...would the door have opened, exposing my naughty bits to Manly?

  • 16. Jester's Pies
    http://www.jesters.com.au/

Why can't we have a place like this in the States? Just buy a nice meaty pie, a green salad, and grab a Lift lemon drink, and I'm straight!

  • 17. Market City
    http://www.marketcity.com.au/

This is a shopper's dream, and it's located near Sydney's Chinatown in Haymarket. You can get just about anything here for a great price -- value for money. The clothes are cool, the atmosphere is lively, and the food is good. I had crunchy, flavorful, fish and chips in the food court on the top floor. Before shopping (or after) you can catch a movie at Reading Cinemas or try the popular Yum Cha at Dragon Star Seafood restaurant or Golden Century Seafood restaurant. The location is convenient because it's on the Sydney Explorer route.

  • 18. Art Gallery of New South Wales
    http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/

I have to go back...one visit is not enough! This place is absolutely stunning...inside and out. It's located near the Royal Botanic Gardens, overlooking the beach and near the Opera House. There are galleries containing Australian art, Aboriginal art, Victorian art, etc. Give the sun a rest and go in for some art appreciation.

  • 19. Royal Botanic Gardens & The Domain
    http://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/royal_botanic_gardens

Green and great...a slice of peace in the city. Don't let the flying bats scare you away. ;-)

  • 20. Sydney Bridge Pylon Lookout
    http://www.pylonlookout.com.au/Visitor_frs.htm

This is a great alternative to doing the Bridge Climb and less expensive. The view is amazing and worth it after you climb the 200 steps! You can learn more about "The Coat Hanger" through the museum displaying historical photos of the construction of the bridge.

  • 21. Star City Casino
    http://www.starcity.com.au/dir013/internetpublishing.nsf/content/intro

Sydney's little slice of Las Vegas. Not bad...

  • 22. Centennial Park
    http://centennialparklands.com.au/cp

I celebrated one of the best birthdays ever in Sydney -- received a precious gift, and attended a great concert with (and watched on stage) a very special man at this SPACIOUS park (F. Sparkle R.I.P.). This green piece of existence attracts everyone, from in-line skaters, families, lovers on a picnic, to those who just want to soak in the lush green of the parklands. There are picnic areas with barbecue grills, a restaurant, a cafe, and many food kiosks selling snacks and such.
