Free destinations within the city that provide a unique taste of Indianapolis at a very unique price.....Free!
This is a unique destination. A park that has a charm and elegance that will come as a great surprise so close to an urban setting. It is less than three miles from the Circle and has amenities that will seem out of place in a city park. An Arts Center which has played host to world class exhibitions including an exhibit from the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Series. A conservatory with the worlds first fountains designed specifically to be choreographed to light and sound. A statue near the gardens was erected by an act of Congress and was dedicated by none other than Teddy Roosevelt, William Fairbanks his Vice President, and James Whitcomb RIley the poet lauriet of Indiana. Also in the park is an aquatics facility complete with two fieldhouse style basketball courts and workout equipment. The Macallister performing arts center is also a must. Concerts are held every week during summer as well as theatrical and special use displays on occasion. This has even played host to such greats as Dolly Parton and Porter Wagner.
This is the true center of town and offers a remarkable view from the top. Bellow is the Coln. Eli Lilly civil war museum which is of course free of charge, though to reach the top of the monument for free you will need to take the stairs. Many of which are engraved with names of fallen soldiers.
A truly stunning and even sacred place of rememberance. An art deco treasure which features two floors of interactive exhibits. Most notably the trench recreations in the section devoted to the world war. The alter room located at the top of twin stairwells lined with the names of everyone who passed in WWI from Indiana is a gem. Tranquil and beautiful it is a marble wonder that is hard to describe. Second only to Washington DC!
Worth a look for its nature center alone which often plays host to art exhibitions. Trails and other activities abound.
A free venue for concerts and films located in a beautiful building along the canal in downtown Indy. Host of many free concerts and films as well as historic exhibitions many of which feature such historic figures as Abraham Lincoln.
A small monorail that offers a free ride and a great overview of the city. Though admitedly an unconventional attraction.
Free concert and art exhibition space located in a great suspended glass dome overlooking the busiest thoroughfares downtown. Circle Center mall and the Hyat Regency Shopping Center are attached.
A beautiful space that will be worth the relatively short tour. This was one of the stops where lincoln was displayed during his funeral procession to springfield.
