Maui memories

We stayed up in the mountains in Haiku in one of the two rooms offered for rent by home owner. The room was $65 a night and clean but small. Ideal for budget off beat accomodations in expensive Maui. Housekeeping was once in a couple days but we emptied the trash a few times during our 12 day stay. Thay had made our room specially for new year and also gave us small gifts. Overall will stay again for the price.

The roda leading to iao needle state pakr is very pretty and the park itself offers a couple small hikes, great mountain scenery and a creek. Can spend anything from 15 minutes to 2 hours in this place.

Its nice natural diversion if u r in the area. Pictures of the tree canopy come out well. All free and paid parking is clearly marked in 'Maui Revealed' guidebook.

Buy at the booth and eat in the Lahaina Square kind of place. We enjoyed the vegetarain kabobs and the sides and the location.

-Dragon's teeth - Makalua-puna Point - Well worth stopping for. Great wave action and formations.
-Nakalele Blowhole - Short hike to view the blowhole. Pretty cool and u can actually get very near to be misted by it.
We only had time for so much that afternoon as we wanted to catch sunset at Kaanapaali Beach

Contrary to popular opinion this is not my favourite beach in Maui. Super crowded with resorts and restaurants literally taking over the beach and the beach being fairly narrow did not help. A very good place for some seaside fine dining.

Cheap for Kaanaplai standards. Okay bland fine dining food. It was great watching the sunset for dinner

Great dive op and the best experience diving. Molokini wall was good but the best part was the dolphins and whales along the way. We had dolphins swimming along the wake of the boat for a long time during our return trip. The dive trips with all operators start insanely early to return before the winds pick up which we did not enjoy. Mike Severns pay attention to the environment and educate you on different species etc. Great food on the boat too. Highly recommended.

We actually wanted to do the Lahaina Pali trail but could not find the access point from inland. In any case, this hike was very enjoyable. Need shoes as the cinder can get into ur flipflops or sandals and cause discomfort. Climbing this 360 ft hill is not too difficult and can be done within an hour or two. Finding the trailhead is a little difficult but Maui Revealed helps. Sweeping views of Big beach and Maui coastline, nice breeze. Great returns for the effort put in.

One of our most favourite beaches in the island. Long, wide and without the intrusion of resorts. SOme waves but calmer than west maui.

Moderately tough trail in terms of steepness. Well maintained it goes though forests and up mountains with great views of the west maui coastline and the mountains. A recommended half a day hike preferaby done in the morning before the clouds and move in to obstruct views.

-Kahukolua Head - a view point of a mound.
-Olivine pools - though we did not get down to the pools, the viewpoint was great with castle like rock formations.
-Mushroom rock - Another formation totally worth stopping for.
ALl in all rugged picturesque coastline.

We were supposed to go diving with Mike Severns again but I had a bit of a cold (Cancellation policy applied and we lost money :-(). So off we went on the Road to Hana. Since we stayed in Haiku we got an early start and by 7.30 we were on the road to Hana at the first attraction.

Waikamoi Nature Trail
This is the first attraction we stopped at. It has an easy loop trail and great foliage. The huge mango trees were a treat to the eyes. Compared to the metro mango trees growing in our backyard, these trees appeared as if from Lord of the Rings.

Lower Puohokamoa Falls
Second stop was this waterfalls. The water was not gushing or anythig. It was a drought year in Hana.

Haipua'ena falls
A pool with s short falls. Cold water.

Ke'anae Peninsula lookout
Smashing view of the ocean.

Punalau Falls
A hike on boulders but very pretty vegetation.

Honomanu bay
With a stream joining the ocean this place was beautiful.

Ke'anae Peninsula
Our most favourite stop on Road to Hana. Very romantic and relaxing. The banana bread was great too at the roadside store.

Ching's Pond
Inspite of what the Blue Book stays none of these ponds/waterfalls/pools were enticing enough to swim in. Cold, low water levels were some reasons. We did see some dare devils diving.

Upper Waikani Falls - Three bears falls
We looked at the falls from the lookout. We didn't take the hike suggested in the Blue Book.

Pua'a Ka'a State Park
We took the trail to the top of falls but didn't go further.

Makapipi Falls
Visible from the road. Nice vantage point of top of falls and the stream.

Nahiku
A beautiful drive and a great place to watch the surf.

Blue Pool
Our second favourite place on the Road to Hana. There was not a whole lot of water but we still walked directly below the falls and had a refreshing swim. This was the last stop of our day and we headed back to Haiku.

Not as recommended as Waihee Ridge trail but easier and more of a family hike. The water at the end of the hike was not enticing enough to take a plunge. U have some hanging bridges and u cross a stream.

Lots of swim thrus and interesting critters. We went with Ed Robinsons Diving. They were okay but not as good as Mike Severns Diving. Focus on macro stuff inside swim thrus. Clear water for diving.

Fun tour we saw a whale and calf very close to the boat, whale breaching. Pretty cool tour and would love to do it again. we donated money for all their great work and got a cool poster.

Great deep dish pizzas though this is a national chain.

Boogie Boarding in Maui in not as dependable as Big Island's Hapuna Beach but is still fun.

We reached the park just after sunrise and began our long hike from Sliding Sands Trailhead after parking our car in Halemau'u trailhead and getting a lift. If one word describes the hike, it is serene. The last set of switchbacks up Halemau'u trail was a killer with sun relentlessly beating down on us. Lots os birdwarching and guaranteed sliversword and nene sightings.We caught sunset in Haleakala national aprk in the other side of the crater. It was still above clouds and felt like a sunset from the plane. I am not sure how sunrise will be from the crater side.

We took hwy 31 and 37 to Hana and we enjoyed the drive a lot. less traffic and great views of south maui.

It is a trail with trees, bigger trees and water falls. All the water features were drier but the trail was still worth it. Very tropical. We were able to take a plunge in Waikamoku Falls. The sacred pools were almost dry and not worth it at that time.

Supposed to be good for boogie boaring but wasn't great the day were there. The beach was popular with the locals.

Nice beach with some caves and vegetation.
