Tired of the Hyatts and Hiltons? Your weekend getaway gets a twist at these Northeast gems...
Former worker housing for the mill across the street (now a modern museum), the major restoration here led to modern rooms with retro touches. The blue slate-floored bathrooms feature kohler fixtures and deep tubs. Pool and hot tub are open 24/7/365. Visit Mass MOCA across the street, have dinner in town, relax in the comfy bed you'll want to take home with you. The desk has a DVD library and small bar for a nightcap. Get breakfast served to your door in a silver lunchbox with a thermos of coffee.
Two simple rooms at the top of this ligthhouse can be booked all year round. If you plan to go with another couple, you'll have your own little retreat. You'll hike through the woods to get out here so pack the makings for dinner (You can use their grill and dishes.) Crack open a bottle of wine and watch the boats drift by as the sun sets. Start the morning with a jump off the dock into the Hudson before the innkeeper calls you in for a hearty breakfast.
It's pricey, to be sure. But hey, it's a castle! The restaurant is fabulous and Tarrytown is filled with historic attractions.
Ghosthunters: this historic inn is for you. Ask for a haunted room, and you will almost certainly get one! New Hope and Lambertville, NJ (across the bridge) are fun places for shopping--antiques and otherwise--dining, strolling, and people watching. Don't miss the mule-drawn canal boat ride and the sunset ghost tours. Small town with a hip undercurrent.
Located in Cooperstown, NY, the birthplace of baseball, this grand dame of a historic hotel is unusual in the way it transports you back in time. Take a rowboat out on the lake or have a cocktail while sitting in a rocker on the sweeping back balcony. The lower level is filled with B&W photos of the inn's early days. In town, restaurants, an art museum, farmer's museum, and, of course, the baseball hall of fame, make for a weekend with plenty to do. (There's a spa in town for the gals if he gets too caught up in a game at Doubeday Field or the batting cages nearby.)
it's a real splurge, but rooms are huge (some are 2 stories with a winding staircase) and this is a great place to hideout from the real world. Play billiards, sit in front of the fire, shop in town, go to the beach, curl up in the four-poster bed with a book, or get tickets for the Westport theater. This place has hosted celebs, dignitaries, and plenty of couples looking for a weekend of romance.
The website is a little whack, but their cabin-in-the-woods experience is not. Trails, views, fishing, canoeing, swimming, porches, fireplaces--and they're pet-friendly too. Get back to the backcountry. This IS the Adirondacks you've been looking for.
The new spa only adds to an already amazing expereience at this sprawling old-fashioned hotel literally built into the side of a mountain. Lovely in any season, but the best rates are mid-week in the winter. Rates include meals, and things like hiking and swimming are free. Ice skating and carriage rides carry a charge, but this is a romantic place to explore and an architectural marvel.
