1. Why Barcelona?
As a Tenerife resident I am entitled to cheap flights to mainland Spain so booked a flight to Barcelona where I decided to spend a few days before driving to the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France

I was looking for good quality accommodation close to the city centre but I was not prepared to pay 200+ Euros per night to stay in the Plaça de Catalunya. Finally booked the Amray Diagonal Hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of June.

The hotel is in a great location a few metres from the Torre Agbar which you can use as a landmark from most parts of the city. The metro is a 5 minute walk away and using Line 1 you are just 4 stops from Plaça de Catalunya where you can then walk down the famous La Rambla or take the Bus Turistic which will ensure you see all the major sites are wonderful architecture in the city.
2. DAY ONE - Take the Bus
You can for just 19 Euros for one day or 23 Euros for 2 days travel on the brilliant Barcelona Bus Turistic. Catch the bus from the Plaça de Catalunya and try to get a seat on the open top deck.

The bus has three routes that are interchangeable. You can hop on and off the bus as many times as you like. There are 6 places where you can change from one colour route to another or just get off at one of the 44 main tourist sites. To complete all three routes will take about 6 hours so day one is pretty full.

The RED Route includes amongst its highlights Gaudi's La Pedrera (The Casa Mila) and his Sagrada Familia. For football lovers FC Barcelona Stadium and for art lovers the Museum d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA).

The BLUE Route takes you round some of the cities popular shopping areas, past the 1992 Olympic Stadium and Olympic Village, check out some of Miro's sculptures, the World Trade Centre and finally the Barri Gotic.

The GREEN (Forum) Route concentrates on the area around Poblenou.
3. DAY TWO - Back on the Bus
Hopefully you have bought a 2 day bus ticket so you can visit all of the sites you found so interesting yesterday. With luck you made a note of which were of particular interest (bet the list is pretty long!!).
4. DAY THREE - Go Walkabout
The Rambla is the best-known landmark in Barcelona. Winding down from the Plaça de Catalunya to the Columbus statue, the centre is filled with stalls selling animals and birds, souvenir kiosks, and of course its flower stalls are world-famous. There are all sorts of artists, from those who paint your portrait to those who dress in outrageous costumes and pose for hours on end. It is undoubtedly the place where everyone gets together, both tourists and locals.

Off to the left is the Mercat de la Boqueria, the city's most famous market where the fruit and vegetable displays are a work of art in themselves.

On the opposite side of the road is the Barri del Raval, formerly the red-light district of the city. This area no longer has a bad reputation and you will find many small restaurants and bars where you can spend a very pleasant evening.

You should not miss the Barri Gòtic, the best thing to do is to wander round the small streets. While you are in this area you should try to visit the Picasso Museum and the church of Santa Maria del Mar

Barcelona is one of the nicest cities in Europe. Its small streets and shops, everything tempts you to wander haphazardly around, getting to know this charming city.
